I love adding things like this business card to my ruler collection. It fits the Collection Policy: made of paper; has an image of a ruler; AND a ruler joke ("on the square"). I love too that it advertises a business so far from here (Massachusetts). The back side--not pictured--gives... Continue reading

A new ruler/blotter featuring the home of our first president, George Washington. It was issued in 1932, in honor of the 200th anniversary of GW's 1732 birth. It's not often that a blotter or a ruler comes with a date! It was very nice to have a day off today... Continue reading

This year I branched out a little and made ruler-shaped bookmarks instead of ruler-themed valentines. That just didn't feel right, so I went ahead and made some new Valentines Day rulers, too. I just couldn't not make some rulers... Happy Valentines Day to you all. Ruler template: Purchase (etsy) -... Continue reading

I bought this blotter because of the crossed-out text on the front; it just amused me... This style of blotter, with a standard image and space for custom printing, for businesses to give out as advertising, was very popular in the first half of the 20th century. My ruler collection... Who doesn't love ruler "jokes"? Someday, maybe after I retire, I'm going to do a whole exhibit on rulers from my collection that play with the word "ruler" or "rule" or "measure up." Here's one small sample: a bookmark recently purchased on etsy. The tiny words in the Buick logo... Continue reading

This beauty of a ruler started out as a cigar box label, described by the ebay vendor as an "inner" box label. It's in perfect condition, and the gold ink is still shiny. The text on the ruler image says "Title and Design Registered. March 14th 1899."" Not sure yet... Continue reading

My ruler collection already has a lot (a lot!) of these Mentholatum blotters, a few without any specific advertiser but most custom-printed for a specific business. These two blotters were an etsy purchase from "The Ladybug Next Door," of Galesburg, Illinois, and they are in perfect condition. AND they have... Continue reading

This is a pocket 1943 calendar/ruler/promotional advertising piece for Paramount Liquors in Jamaica Plain that also encourages purchase of U.S. War bonds. The inside shows the base pay for service members of all ranks in several branches of the U.S. military. (No Space Force in 1943!) Because it's made of... Continue reading

One of the strong collecting areas within my ruler collection is "campaign rulers," including some with ruler "jokes" such as "Ike Measures Up" and "GOLDWATER A Leader - Not a Ruler." This new acquisition is a blotter dated 1950, most likely a give-away, to promote the candidacy of Earl E.... Continue reading

This is a selection from a box of 30 light-weight card stock 14cm bookmarks that I bought on etsy last month. They were manufactured by Moore Paper Works in Hangzhou, China, a firm that promotes itself as a "pick me lifestyle" company. Each bookmark has a different design. Purchase (etsy)... Continue reading

A new signature blotter, this one from 1921-1922, advertising the Rau Appraisal Col of Milwaukee. Here's the ad for the company, from the Milwaukee city directory of 1922. (Thank you, familysearch.org.) Back, showing blotter sheets used blot the ink from signatures: Ad from the Milwaukee 1922 city directory: Purchase (ebay)... Continue reading

This past weekend was the Boston International Antiquarian Book Fair, where I spent most of the book fair hours at the information table for the Ephemera Society of America. Book fair dealers and visitors seemed to like hearing about ephemera, including those that hadn't heard the word before. To illustrate... Continue reading

I had to look these guys up. Turns out these ruler/bookmarks show two of the seven members of WayV, according to their Wikipedia article "the fourth sub-unit and the China-based unit of the Hallyu localization project group, NCT. The unit is composed of seven members: Kun, Ten Winwin, Lucas, Xiaojun,... Continue reading

I have a lot of what I call "favorites" in my ruler collection; this is the latest acquisition to fall definitely in that category. It's a promotional piece for the Waterbury [Connecticut] Battery Company, and it combines advertising, rulers in two units of measure, a 1935 calendar, and the best... Continue reading

Two more 4" blotter/trade cards from my ebay treasure trove of last month. This time: dogs. I need to figure out who the artist in this series is, as well as the name of the trade card manufacturer. No clues that I can find except for the "Style" number printed... Continue reading

Another kitten, this time on a blotter/trade card advertising the General Sign Company in Kansas City, Kansas. It's one of fourteen I acquired last month from Arleen Willis of Suffern, NY. Looks like they all came out of some sort of scrapbook, or salesman's sample book. More kittens to come.... Continue reading

Staples was selling these laminated paper 3-ring binder inserts today; one side has a map of the United States and a ruler marked in inches, and the other side has a map of the world and a ruler marked in centimeters. I'm embarrassed to admit that I thought there were... Continue reading

Another example of a generous friend who brought back a ruler (or two!) from a recent travel adventure. These two plastic rulers came from my friend Elizabeth's trip to Vietnam. I have what I call "souvenir" rulers from all over the world. Gift - Elizabeth Kenney - September 2019 Continue reading

Who doesn't love kittens? These three don't look like they're worrying much about saving money, even though tomorrow may bring opportunity or ill fortune. (Just quoting from the text on this blotter. I don't wish the kittens any harm. I love kittens.) This blotter is one of a set I... Continue reading

Look at that beautiful ruler, stretched right across this trade card (not to scale)! This is one of my favorite styles of "advertising advertising," with great graphics and multiple typefaces.
