“Thank goodness it’s Friday!” I followed up my 9-hour workday with a 20-minute commute. I rushed home, changed clothes, grabbed my headphones and hopped back into the car. It was poker night. I was running slightly behind schedule, but no reason to panic. I would be there in plenty of time to crush the competition. I’m about 15 minutes away from the game and my phone rings. The caller id popped up “MOM”. I turned down the music and picked up. I hadn’t spoken to her all day, which was pretty unusual for us. I answered the phone in my... Continue reading

My uncle T and I have a very unique relationship to say the least. I’m sure that will change once he finds out what I did to his car. More on that later. Training wheels on a bicycle are a kids best friend. Who doesn’t love riding a bike when the chances of falling off are next to zero. You can ride hard over almost any terrain with reckless abandon. I guess uncle T hated watching me speed up and down my grand mothers driveway with training wheels attached to the bike. I don’t remember the verbal exchange, but I... Continue reading

I have kept track of the many milestones in my life…some worth remembering… others ..mmm not so much. This particular gem comes from 7th grade. Oh and it’s classic if I do say so myself…. Ok… I would never call myself a “ladies man” especially back then… I was a skinny kid with a high voice, big head, big nose and hairless arms & legs… lol (it’s ok you can laugh) I didn’t know what to say to girls (of course girls aren’t regular people lol)…it just made for very awkward “conversations” and I use the term conversations very loosely.... haha! Ten minutes an hour…it's all the same. I guess I was giving Malcolm some speed credits...but we can't forget his infamous nickname "Molasses Man”. Hmm good idea…I think I will tell that story…perhaps with a slightly different ending then you remember. ;)

Road trips? I love road trips. New people , new places , new things to see. On this particular road trip I was traveling home, home to my old stomping grounds …Richmond, VA. I made the 6 hour hike from State College, PA to Richmond at least 12 times a year - depending on special events and holidays. I had a system…my route and routine were down to a science. I could skate by most of the work traffic and get to Richmond just before rush hour. It was perfect! A lot of the time I would invite friends to... Continue reading

The most nerve wrecking times throughout school was Parent Teacher Conference (PTC) …hands down. I tried every trick I knew to avoid it. I would “accidently” leave the PTC notice at school …I would all of a sudden not feel so well… I would literally do anything I could think of to avoid it. But somehow my mom always knew when it was and dragged me along. I guess I should have realized our neighbor, who was a teacher at the school was tipping her off. PTC was such an awkward moment …it’s like two planets colliding something has to... Continue reading

From the age of 5 to 15 baseball was my sport of choice. I played every position from catcher to left field. Baseball was great, I made a lot of good friends and learn some skills to boot. One of the leagues coach’s Mr. Parker lived around the corner from my house. His son and I were friends and played on the same team. Mr. Parker would sometimes pick me up and drop me off after practice. One weekend he decided to have a cookout over his house and I was invited. Cookout?! Count me in! I had to be... Continue reading

For a long time I’ve had issues with speaking up in a public setting. I’m not talking about giving a speech or being in a play… I’m talking about giving opinions or answering questions. I was always afraid of being humiliated or just looking stupid in front of people. But, the thing is… when you don’t speak up you miss out on opportunities. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been in a meeting or a classroom and debated in my head whether to say something or not... then 5 minutes someone else blurts out what I was thinking.... I’ve contemplated writing this blog a few times before. I usually don’t have a problem sharing any aspect of my life …but this for some reason is a little different. Right now I have no idea what direction this post will go in…I’m just going to write. Here goes…. In 90% of my posts I talk about my mother …I don’t think I’ve mentioned my father in a single line. It’s a reason for that…he wasn’t really around. As a kid I didn’t give it much thought…it seemed pretty normal to be raised in a single parent home. My mom... Continue reading

Who wouldn’t want a friend like me? Last weekend I was talking to a friend of mine on the phone. Him and I have literally been friends forever. You know you’ve been friends for a long time when you can’t remember when or where you met. Gary and I grew up together … we went to the same church …we went to the same high school, our mothers were good friends…we’re as close to actual family as you can get. Our birthdays are 9 days apart …and as his unofficial big brother… I took it upon to pick on him…rough... Continue reading

For 22 years it was just my mother and I… Over protective? I didn’t think I was …you just have to be perfect to date my mom! Her and I have an incredible bond…I can’t really describe it in words. So when she told me she met someone… I had mixed emotions. I don’t know if it was selfishness or what …but I never thought about my mom getting re-married …or even seriously dating. “Oh she’s my mom …she’s fine!” She told me how they met and how nice he was… he had 2 kids he was a Pastor of... I’m sure at one time or another we’ve all had a nightmare roommate, but I bet you’ve never had one like “Bobby aka Mr. Nice Guy.” 2000 was the year I met Bobby. Bobby was an adult learner, which for lack of a better definition means he was a little older than the normal freshman…I’d say he was in his early 30’s late 20’s. Bobby had short-cropped black hair, very Julius Caesar-esque. He looked like an ex-football player who hadn’t been in a gym or on the field for a few months. Bobby was literally the friendliest person I had... Continue reading

Midway through the 4th grade I transferred schools. I was the new kid, so instantly I had lots of friends and lots of enemies. I still don’t quite get the “new kid” phenomenon but…all the girls think you’re cute, the not so popular guys want to be your friend and the cool kids hate you…. Transferring from Montrose to Ratcliffe mid semester was great for my grades. At Montrose we were weeks ahead of Ratcliffe in the curriculum. Needless to say I capitalized on it and aced every test. Well, with good grades comes more disdain from your classmates…it’s really... Continue reading

Growing up in a pretty religious family… I was always told to stay away from psychics…not sure if I really understood why, but the warnings gave me a healthy fear of them. I mean… do you know how tempting it is to see a Mrs. Cleo commercial and not call immediately … especially when she says “call me now!” The bible is full of prophets…right? I just didn’t understand the logic of accepting the bible prophets and not the modern ones. Did God just stop making them? But if you know anything about me …you’ll know that telling me not... When I left for college I had no idea how big of an impact it would have on me. I was leaving a city were over %80 of the population was African-American and moving to a town with less than %1. I was in for the culture shock of my life. Quick Stats Check: Hazelton’s campus had about 1200 students at the time. 12 of those students including myself we’re African American. At this point in my life… I only had African-American friends. I wasn’t opposed to having other races as friends...I just wasn’t exposed to other people. My first... Continue reading

This morning I got a phone call from my mom…and I can usually tell from her tone whether it’s going to be good or bad news. I knew instantly something was wrong …so I took a deep breath and waited for whatever it was she was about to tell me. “Uncle Ollie passed this morning….” Death is inevitable, but it something I don’t think about on a regular basis…it’s a pretty depressing topic…but every time someone I know passes …I’m forced to focus on it. To cope or help with the grief … I usually pick one great memory of... Continue reading

Every time I think back to high school, all I can do is shake my head. I made some really terrible decisions, but I guess that’s the case for most people… You live and learn right? The story that I am about to share is definitely among the dumbest choices I’ve ever made! I’ll set the stage…. I grew up in Richmond, VA …and at that time Richmond had one the nations highest murder rates. Needless to say it was a pretty rough place. Living there you almost became numb to the violence…. guns at the basketball court, guns at... Continue reading

I’ve had issues with spelling ever since I can remember. Me being crowned “Spelling Bee Champion” was definitely something my mom would never see. My most horrific experiences in school were spelling related. Every time a teacher would call on me to write something on the board…I felt like my heart would jump out my chest. I had clammy hands, a sweaty brow… all classic signs of a panic attack …but I was never fortunate enough to make it to the pass out stage. I would have taken that embarrassment over misspelling the word “subject” on the board. Over time... Continue reading

I wasn’t a bad child…I was…..ummm “inquisitive” . Like, what would happen if I soaked this toilet paper in rubbing alcohol and lit it on fire? Just in case you're curious… you get a pretty neat flame and a weird smell in the house…that you have to get rid of before your mom gets home. Being an only child you have to make your own fun… I thought it’d be fun to run under a cloud pepper spray while my mom was at choir rehearsal. Wouldn’t you? Side Note: VERY bad idea! As a only child you have lots of... Continue reading

I’ve been beating myself up for the past couple of days…. Over the weekend I missed the chance to possibly change someone’s life… I was at a “get together” and met a young men...nothing special …just hanging out chit chatting. I guess he felt comfortable enough to start talking about how he sold drugs and what not. For those who know me … you know how much I hate drugs; weed, coke…hmph! you can even throw alcohol in the mix… Unfortunately, I think I have a similar story to a lot of young African – American’s …. I’ve had friends... Continue reading

It’s been 84 Days, 2,016 hours or 120,960 minute...since my surgery (pick one! They all seem like an eternity …lol It’s weird how fate works… I called my friend Bill who I’ve know for almost 10 years and asked him if he’d be willing to take me to the hospital, then drop me off at my house after the surgery.. . he agreed ( sweet!) After the surgery I was feeling pretty good …the drugs were masking the pain I’d later feel…but Bill said “Hey why don’t you just stay over my house for a few hours, then I’ll take... I was at a pretty nice restaurant last year and over heard a guy talking about what he did for his 30th birthday…. “Since all of my friends are spread out over the country… we decided for my 30th birthday we would meet up and do 30 things. We went sky diving, we surfed …” He proceeded to name all the things he had done and all the places he had traveled to. I thought wow this guys is so arrogant and pompous... Maybe it was a little bit of jealously… but I couldn’t decide whether to applaud him for... Continue reading
