Not calling the maximum, but calling the record at least. All those snowstorms that famously hit the northeast US tend to move up the coast and dump even harder over the land masses that border the Gulf of Saint Lawrence (NB, NS, PEI, and Nfld). So there's presumably a lot of frozen stuff to melt, not just in area but also in volume. That said, the weather a bit further up the Saint Lawrence (i.e. Montreal) seems like it goes back to the seasonal norm starting tomorrow. It won't be long before the Gulf starts to thaw.

Neve, I can't help but notice that your map has an arrow labeled "Saint Lawrence" pointed at the Strait of Belle Isle. I'm assuming that arrow is supposed to point at the Gulf of Saint Lawrence instead? An aside: the arrow points where the Vikings are known to have (very briefly) settled at l'Anse aux Meadows, at the tip of Newfoundland. Wikipedia says it's a grassy area; I recall tundra from my visit 25 years ago.

The story claims it's about albedo. I presume the longer explanation is that it takes more snow to cover up trees and shrubs than to cover up shrubs and mosses?
