By Christopher Mims} September 8, 2011 Here, in its entirety, is the incredibly moving, just-released, Tom Hanks-narrated, 11-minute documentary of the largest-ever evacuation by boat in history. In nine hours, boats streaming in from all over the Northeast evacuated 500,000 people trapped on Manhattan Island by the complete shutdown of all trains and bridges in the wake of the fall of the twin towers. (Compare that with history’s second-biggest evacuation, of 339,000 soldiers and civilians from Dunkirk, in WWII, which took nine days.) One of the things this event illustrates is that in cities present and future, redundancy is one of the keys to resilience. New York has long neglected its waterfront, and in the face of rising seas it is even occasionally seen as... Continue »

by Dawn Watson (cnbnews.net) It’s no secret that dogs can hear better than average humans. According to one Internet source, “Dogs can hear far higher ranges of sounds and tones than people. They can hear ultrasonic frequencies like a dog whistle or a squeaking mouse while we can't. "Dog can hear between 40,000 to 100,000 vibrations per second while a human can only hear about 20,000 vibrations per second. “Generally, a dog's sense of hearing is not that much different from a human's sense of hearing. The only major difference is that dogs can pick up some higher frequencies. But, contrary to popular belief, dogs cannot hear noises from miles away. Dogs and people hear noises coming from the same distance away. "One thing a... Continue »

The leftist media are now officially shameless. Senator Harry Reid disgraced the Senate floor by linking the tiny budget cuts known as the sequester to seven Marines dying in a terrible accident. ABC, CBS, and NBC gave this outrageous lie ZERO seconds of coverage. They censored one of the most disgusting lies ever uttered by a Senator on the Senate floor. I never cease to be appalled by the stories the liberal media will censor in order to advance the radical Left's dangerous agenda. But this time they have gone too far. If Senator Reid had an ounce of honor, he would immediately resign. We know he does Harry Reid (Photo credit: Cosmic Smudge) n't, so he won't. If the liberal media had an ounce... Continue »

By Leigh Anne Hubbs Gloucester City News (Gloucester City News June 26 issue)The Mount Ephraim School District legally must have a Chief School Administrator by July 1. So, rather than rush into hiring a replacement for Superintendent Joseph Rafferty who will become the superintendent of the Gloucester City School District, Board of Education (BOE) members have approved a contract for an interim administrator. Effective July 1 until October 31 of this year, Diane DeGiacomo will act as the Interim Chief School Administrator at a rate of $519.23 per day. Ms. DeGiacomo stood up during June’s BOE meeting and said she is looking forward to working with everyone. In other news, School Board members passed a motion to refinance the district’s debt and save approximately $200,000,... Continue »

Image via Wikipedia HARRISBURG – When is the largest bear killed in Pennsylvania’s bear season not the largest bear harvested? When it is the largest bear killed over bait, which equals poaching. That’s what happened when Charles W. Olsen Jr., of Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, decided that it’d be easier to kill a bear over a pile of pastries, rather than the method used by ethical hunters. Pennsylvania Game Commission Wildlife Conservation Officer (WCO) Cory Bentzoni became suspicious when he saw a truck loaded with pastries from a local store driving along Route 309 in Dallas, Luzerne County. “As we were about one week away from the opening of the statewide bear season, I thought that something illegal might be underway,” WCO Bentzoni said. “Being that...
