As we wrap up our fast this year, I want to share a story of fasting that happened to me this year. It was only a few months ago in fact. I have not fasted nearly enough in the past year. I used to be so diligent about it and there was a time when it came easier, but sadly as things improve - I find myself fasting less and even praying less. I'm not proud of this at all and fully realize that this is how Satan regains a stronghold. That said, something started really pestering my spirit about needing to spend a day fasting. And it had to be on the upcoming Wednesday of that week. By the time Wednesday came around, I had kind of forgotten about it - but no, the minute I woke up - there it was. I mean there was no getting around... Continue reading

How is the fast going for everyone? We're just over halfway through. I personally haven't had nearly the amount of time I would have liked to spend in quiet prayer. Time and quiet are nowhere to be found in my life right now. But I think fasting in itself is a form of prayer (I hope so.) And I've managed to pray consistently throughout the days. I've had to remind myself that God meets us right where we are. This story has stuck with me all of these years, but I hadn't really thought about it until I was praying about what posts to do for this fast. One day a few years back, Lily and I were sitting at Starbucks right up against the wall. Next to me I noticed a really cool mural, but I kept on chatting and drinking my mocha. But I couldn't stop looking at... Continue reading

I think it's safe to say that all of us have been placed in a waiting room. We are all waiting for something - our spouse's salvation, our prodigal children to return, our health to be restored, our marriage to be restored, our financial burdens to cease - I could probably fill many pages with things we are collectively waiting for. I often think about my own personal "waiting room." I look around and I think God has set me up pretty well in my time of waiting. He's blessed me with so much while I wait and wait and wait. He's used this time to strengthen my spiritual muscles - particularly patience and humility and perseverance. He's gifted me with relationships that I would have never found outside the waiting room. He's filed down and rounded many of my rough edges making me a soft place for those in... Continue reading

I And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 Have you ever wondered if God still works ALL things together for our good when we screw up - intentionally or unintentionally. This is something I struggle with. It causes me to lose faith when I make a bad decision, take a wrong turn in life, say something I knew I shouldn't have. It causes me to wonder if God is still going to work all things for my good. The short answer that I've found is - yes - He will and He does. Once a year, my friends and I hold an all-night prayer session. We always start the first hour with praise and thanksgiving. One of the things we reflect on is our favorite thing about God - our... Continue reading

Hello Sumites! Dawn here. Welcome to the annual SUM Rosh Hashanah fast. Many of you may remember last year’s fast. I am honored and thrilled to be leading it again this year. It’s hard to believe that a whole year has passed. I can’t wait to share the amazing things that God has been up to in my life and hear the amazing things He’s been up to in yours. I am excited to spend this week lifting each other up in prayer and encouraging each other as we spend this special time fasting together. What is Rosh Hashanah? I’m going to share straight from Google because I don’t want to butcher this. In Hebrew, Rosh Hashanah means, literally, "head of the year" or "first of the year." Rosh Hashanah is commonly known as the Jewish New Year. Rosh Hashanah commemorates the creation of the world and marks the beginning... Continue reading

So here I am What's left of me Where glory meets my suffering I'm alive Even though a part of me has died You take my heart and breathe it back to life I'll fall into Your arms open wide When the hurt and the healer collide It's the moment when humanity Is overcome by majesty When grace is ushered in for good And all our scars are understood When mercy takes its rightful place And all these questions fade away When out of the weakness we must bow And hear You say it's over now Lyrics to The Hurt and the Healer by Casting Crowns Friends, We made it! Our week of fasting is over after today. The word that comes to mind is VICTORY! Victory over the enemy is ours! Remember from day one – Overwhelming victory! I don’t have any breakthrough stories for this week yet, but... Continue reading

I'm finding myself at a loss for for words And the funny thing is it's okay The last thing I need is to be heard But to hear what You would say Word of God speak Would you pour down like rain Washing my eyes to see Your majesty To be still and know That you're in this place Please let me stay and rest In your holiness Word of God speak Lyrics to Word of God Speak by Third Day I hope you all are having an amazing week. Chances are good that you are under spiritual attack, as sometime happens during weeks like this. Hang in there! We are down to 2 days. I can’t wait to hear the praise reports – big and small - from our time of fasting. I was trying to think if I had a testimony to share about fasting for wisdom and... Continue reading

And when you're tired of fighting Chained by your control There's freedom in surrender Lay it down and let it go Lyrics to Just Be Held by Casting Crowns I was on the fence about sharing this today, because it gets a little personal. But I think it’s an amazing story of God’s glory. So I’ll just be vague about a few of the details. It’s also a story of what happens when we surrender and give God room to do His thing – not my strong point. My divorce was final in September of 2014 – one year prior to our Jubilee Fast. This was after 2 years of separation. After a drawn out divorce, the final results ended with 50/50 child custody and my paying J child support monthly. That’s where it gets a little personal. It’s just a weird thing in Colorado that everything has to be... Continue reading

“If you’ve been walking the same old road for miles and miles If you’ve been hearing the same old voice tell the same old lies If you’re trying to feel the same old holes inside There’s a better life There’s a better life If you’ve got pain He’s a pain taker If you feel lost He’s a way maker If you need freedom or saving He’s a prison-shaking Savior If you’ve got chains He’s a chain breaker” Lyrics to Chain Breaker by Zack Williams I guess by now, you’ve figured out that I love music. If I had to pick a theme song for our fast, this would be it. I for one am so tired of hearing the same old voice tell the same old lies. This week is where the rubber the meets the road – where prayer meets fasting – so LOOK OUT! With fasting, however, comes... Continue reading

“If I told you my story You would hear Hope that wouldn't let go And if I told you my story You would hear Love that never gave up If I should speak then let it be Of the grace that is greater than all my sin Of when justice was served and where mercy wins Of the kindness of Jesus that draws me in Oh to tell you my story is to tell of Him” Lyrics from “My Story” Big Daddy Weave The words to that song are the words to my song – my story. And to tell you my story is to tell of Him. My story of the last year is one filled with hope, love, victory and abundance. It has been a jubilee year indeed and it all started with the Rosh Hashanah community fast here in our Sum Community. It was Monday, September 14th.... Continue reading
