Smells like opportunity. Too bad I'm not interested.
So what will it take to give all our students this level of education?
The beer pedal trolleys Zack is pushing are banned under Federal motor vehicle laws even if every single person riding them is dead sober. State statutes require that any vehicle with more than 3 wheels meet all the standards that automobiles must meet. You see, they don't meet the Federal Definition of a bicycle: "(a) Bicycle means: (1) A two-wheeled vehicle having a rear drive wheel that is solely human-powered; (2) A two- or three-wheeled vehicle with fully operable pedals and an electric motor of less than 750 watts (1 h.p.), whose maximum speed on a paved level surface, when powered solely by such a motor while ridden by an operator who weighs 170 pounds, is less than 20 mph." https://www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/text-idx?SID=ec74f976f0e1233a487dd1c2db5a964f&mc=true&node=se16.2.1512_12&rgn=div8 That's why vehicles like the Elf manufactured in Durham, NC. only have 3 wheels: https://organictransit.com/ And open container laws may still apply against passengers because you can be charged with DUI while operating a bicycle in North Carolina.
If it makes you feel any better, and it should, Manning is the reason many Progressives will simply skip their chance to vote in the Congressional race. I know I will.
Well considering the new owner already has a history of taking $30 plus Million in taxpayer dollars from Greensboro plus taxpayer dollars from other cities I'd not dare bet against you. That appears to be what keeps him in business.
Greensboro has indeed entered into yet another gilded age. And it needs to be remembered that it was the letting of blood that pulled us out of the previous Gilded Age-- veterans marching on the streets, union riots, etc... Will this time be the same? Or will those in charge not let it go to those extremes? Sadly, I think we know the answers.
Truer words have never been spoken.
You can only rob people for so long before they figure out who is actually robbing them. Once the news spreads the establishment will be facing attacks from the left and the right. The elites will fall no matter if they are RINOs or DINOs. That much is for certain. What cannot be known is what will replace them. But no matter, they had their chance, they were warned, they failed to heed the warnings, deserve what they get, and I, for one, am willing to take my chances with whatever replaces them left, right, or center. I just hope everyone can be as hopeful, brave, and accepting. And thank you for allowing the link.
Thank you, Joe!!! With your permission I'd like to give your readers the chance to sign a petition against these special interests and the corporate welfare they are demanding from Greensboro taxpayers. https://www.change.org/p/tell-greensboro-city-council-no-debt-for-decks-in-greensboro
They put both parking garages on the same resolution because they cannot say no to Roy Carroll so when they pass Carroll's parking garage, Kaplan's garage gets passed by default. It's a done deal, the city purchased the land months ago just like when they swindled the taxpayers on the performing arts center. Expect to pay Scarfone upwards of $6 Million.
From the article by Margaret Moffett: http://www.greensboro.com/business/local_business/cone-denim-owners-say-parking-deck-plan-impedes-their-venue/article_e60b3990-4b91-5317-9965-548180c8de3a.html "City officials didn’t know about the right-of-way until they bought the deck in July. Cone Denim’s owners, including businessman Rocky Scarfone, didn’t know about the parking deck until then, either." But Zack knew about it. As reported previously by the Rhino: "Downtown Greensboro Inc. President Zack Matheny said he was aware of the problem..." http://www.rhinotimes.com/archives/city-discovers-easements-buying-downtown-parking-deck-land/ Now how is it Zack knew and no one else knew?
Joe wrote: "I can't see any reason to turn out and vote on Tuesday. There is nobody we can feel good supporting. This is definitely a "choosing the lesser of two evils" election." I am a fiscal conservative. For years now I have been among the leaders in calling for an end to this out of control spending. I'm running for Mayor of Greensboro as a write-in candidate-- why not me? Thessa Pickett who is running as a write-in candidate in District 2 is a fiscal conservative as well. And unlike your John Brown, neither of us have businesses that contract with the City of Greensboro, thereby bringing conflicts of interest to the table: http://gsoapps.greensboro-nc.gov/GSOSiteForms/frmViewPublicRequests.aspx?PREQID=4208 Or do conflicts of interest not matter as long as they "claim" to be conservatives? Man up. Joe, give me the support I deserve.
We have a city run by criminals, thus the reason I saw the need to run a write-in campaign for Mayor of Greensboro. Will conservatives support the only honest candidate? Or would you rather live with 4 more years of what you have now? Yes, a mayor only has 1 vote but a mayor has access to so much more information than any journalist or blogger.
John Brown has no integrity. What happened to integrity?

In the late 1960s and early 1970s Western Electric transferred 30,000 employees to Greensboro. That was what built Northwest Greensboro. But it also led to decades of classrooms in trailers because the school systems couldn't build schools fast enough to meet demand. And before the classrooms were all finished, most of the people who moved to Greensboro retired and either moved to Guilford County or left altogether. By the time the schools were finished the kids were already in college. To add insult to injury, we locals saw no long term improvements in our lives but were stuck with paying for all the infrastructure made necessary by such a large influx of people. And we are still paying for it today. Amazon Go Home!
Looks like the performing arts center all over again.
I'm happy to see the arrests being made. I'm even happier that police handled the arrest in such a sane and non violent manner that allowed not only the criminals to be unharmed but allowed the police officers to return safely home to their families. Statues are, after all, just things. Unlike human lives they can be repaired and replaced. Calls for blood will only make the problems worse.
Now Joe, am I wrong in saying that Quaintance-Weaver accomplished their goals without the usual taxpayer dollars the City of Greensboro throws at the downtown crowd? And when you write, With regard to this competition between Quaintance-Weaver and the downtown crowd, there are no parties worthy of our empathy. We are observing two slightly different versions of "yuck". are you not therefore JUDGING? And doesn't the good book you claim to base your faith upon, contain a passage that reads, depending on which version you use: New International Version "Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. New Living Translation "Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn others, or it will all come back against you. Forgive others, and you will be forgiven. Release Quaintance-Weaver, forgive them, set them free, pardon them, and you shall be forgiven, set free, released, and saved from condemnation. For you see, Joe, unlike the others, they have done nothing to you and I.
And amazingly, despite having lower taxes, South Carolina is 20 to 40 years ahead of North Carolina in the rail and port infrastructures needed to bring manufacturing to NC. Overtaxing while underspending on infrastructure is a sure fire way to destroy any economy. Sadly, 50 years ago, Democrats understood how this worked but today they don't. And apparently modern day Republicans don't either. Where is Ike when we need him most?
"Ironically, the lives lost due to the spike in homicides are disproportionately African-American. These lives are regarded by our local political culture as expendable. There are, after all, greater political objectives to be pursued." Truth! And I checked, you're right about the numbers.

Don't you get it? This is yet another form of CORPORATE WELFARE. Corporations don't want to pay workers enough to afford these types of services so in order to entice workers to work for the lowest wages possible, the taxpayers must pay the price by paying for government funded services and government waste. And you know how both political parties love to give away corporate welfare.
From my own post: "I disagree with Joe in that what he calls Socialism, I call Fascism. You see, both are a redistribution of wealth but Socialism is a downward redistribution of wealth whereas Fascism is an upwards redistribution of wealth. But Joe is 100% correct in writing: "I will enjoy the view at the ballpark. But that does not make the whole thing right." It's time we learned that nice things at the expense of others does not make them right. And such projects being done at the expense of the taxpayers with no chance for public input amounts to little more than slavery by taxation." Thank you, Joe.
Did it for over a year and was very unhappy with the results.

Glad to see at least a few conservatives are finally figuring this out. The same can be said for charter schools. They still must follow the same rules. If you wish to control what your children are taught then local boards and private schools will always be the best options. At least with local boards you are still free to live where the boards still agree with your political views if you are unable to change the make-up of the board where you currently live.
Joe, if you'd admit that the money behind it all comes from conservative developers you'd be 100% on target.
