In the area where I live the council had a budget to build a playground in one of the existing green spaces. Unfortunately the playground never got built because local residents adjacent to the site of the proposed playground objected to the development on the basis that the playground might be used for anti-social purposes after dark (although the existing green was/is already used for anti-social purposes so the playground wasn't going to affect this anyway). I think this is an example of the worst aspects of Irish society, the objecting residents didn't have children in the target age group to use the playground and didn't feel any need to help the other residents who do have children who would love to have a convenient playground.
