Krugman has already discussed this and it is precisely why he warns that the Fed should not raise rates until it sees the white's of inflation's eyes. Volker proved that the Fed can beat inflation. However, the BOJ is still trying to beat deflation. We can pick our battles, but I would bet on winning the battle with the devil we do know as opposed to the one we do not.
