I've been disheartened by the way the whole concept of an "emerging church" has lost credibility among a large portion of evangelicals due to the relentless critiques leveled at it by people like Mohler and Carson (it's "liberalism" all over again, or some version of postmodern "relativism"). For McLaren, I think the question has always been "What kind of church do we want to emerge into?" One that takes seriously issues of justice, cultural engagement, beauty, hospitality and the "open access" nature of truth, or simply a familiar space that reinforces the status quo? To the extent the emerging church poses that critical question - and the extent the church hears the question rather than retreating into retrenchment - I think we can count the whole "emerging" project as a modest success. is now following The Typepad Team
