This photograph of California traffic undercuts the California dream of the open road. The dark photo only lit by car lights packed together gives a negative feel to the idea of the open road. The cars totally jammed together going both ways on a multiple laned road is a great example of a California dream gone bad. David Carle’s description of California traffic fits with this traffic San Francisco traffic photo like a puzzle: "Ironically the freedom from timetables and the mobile convenience that cars represented were replaced by incarceration in traffic gridlock 'prisons'" (Carle 165). The photo of the four female stars of the MTV show The Hills dramatizes and glorifies the California dream of the rich lifestyle. As Starr writes "George Santayana...that nature would ever serve as California's primary symbol of itself: nature conferring the twin gifts of beauty and abundance." (Starr 15) This quote explains the TV show perfectly because all the women are beautiful and they are rich and have an abundance of everything in their glamorous lifestyle. Throughout this course I have had one big and scary monster to tackle and his ferocious name is Procrastination. Procrastination has been my bro throughout my first semester of college and my glorious four years of high school. Then suddenly, in my second semester of college Procrastination, who was my bro, turned into my worst enemy. I soon realized he had been against me the whole time, while this course was trying to improve my sentence variety and grammar (two other monsters I was also fighting). As the semester went on I worked with the whole purpose of my class... Continue reading
