I’m an NHL fan. I love NHL hockey and like most fans, I have not been happy with the state of negotiations between the NHL and the NHLPA. I went from 'not happy' to 'furious' this week when Gary Bettman made his ‘best fans’ comment. I’m not alone in being... Continue reading
Thanks for your comment. Glad you liked the post.
I first heard about the book "Quiet: The Power Of Introverts In a World That Can't Stop Talking" by Susan Cain via Twitter. Apparently a lot of the people I admire are introverts too. I say 'too' because I am an introvert. It was apparent when I was a kid;... Continue reading

From Joni Mitchell’s song Big Yellow Taxi “Don't it always seem to go That you don't know what you've got Till it's gone” Ever noticed that we really don’t know what we have until it’s gone? Ever noticed that when something goes wrong in your life, you just want back... Continue reading

In late December, someone tweeted a question to their followers asking if there was one thing that they had done in 2011 that they would recommend as beneficial to others. I immediately knew what the answer was for me – going ‘into silence’. I didn’t write about it then, but the topic of taking time to reflect has come up a few times this week. One of my friends referred to needing a ‘brain cleanse’, which is a great phrase. So for him, and anyone who might read this, here is my take on what I did, and why I... Continue reading

On Monday, Canadian politician Jack Layton passed away and his political party shared his last letter to Canadians. Many people shared that message via Facebook and Twitter. In particular what they quoted was the end of the letter "My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world". Whether you agreed with Jack's politics or not, that series of sentences is a very powerful message and is worthy of not just discussion, but action. If you posted it somewhere or... Continue reading

In the last two posts we talked about the need for accountability, assistance, and forward movement when you are working towards your goals. We talked about the concept of resistance and that we aren’t taught how to overcome resistance. The obvious next step is to talk about how to create... Continue reading

I first 'met' Benjamin Zander via his TED talk - in fact it was the first one I watched. His enthusiasm and passion for life come through very clearly in that TED talk and so I read his book. Technically it is not his book although I think most people... Continue reading

I don't really remember where I first saw a mention of "Marketing Lessons From The Grateful Dead" but I remember being intrigued by the title. Not because I am a Dead fan - quite the opposite - don't think I could even name a song. However, I certainly know the... Continue reading

Earlier this week, the amazing Amber Naslund (@Ambercadabra - my vote for the best Twitter name) posted a blog with this same title. Her post referenced a conversation she had about social media creating a superficial vantage point and how we think we know other people simply from reading blogs, tweets, and status updates. Partly in response to that and for other reasons, she wrote about who she really is. At the end of that post she invited everyone to do the same - write about what we wish people knew about us. I am taking her up on that... Continue reading

Derek Sivers is brilliant. I often find myself talking about his latest blog entry, and his thoughts are often inspiration for my blog. Derek's book "Anything You Want - 40 Lessons for a New Kind of Entrepreneur" came out this week and it is outstanding. Anyone who manages people, all... Continue reading

Here we are - a week after I posted "Just Do It" and in that week did any of us DO any of the things that will move us towards our goals/towards what we want to achieve? Did we do one thing each day? Did we do one thing? Since... Continue reading

Originally posted 18/08/2009 I know that we all wish that we could magically change our lives without having to do something ... but the unfortunate (or fortunate) truth is you do have to act. Whether you accept that "Twitter is your resume" or you think that the new social tools are stupid; the fact is they exist and the work world will never be the same. As I mentioned in the previous post, I believe that the work world is changing and that our... Continue reading
I knew nothing about Michael Gates Gill when I registered for a conference and saw him listed as the opening speaker. I was immediately intrigued by the name of his book "How Starbucks Saved My Life" so I Googled and found a little of his story, which is, as the... Continue reading

I attended the Alberta Certified Management Accountants (CMA) conference in Calgary on Friday. The speakers included digital marketing guru Mitch Joel and business visionary Leonard Brody. My previous knowledge of Leonard came from watching a presentation on-line, and he did not disappoint - lots of food for thought. I have... Continue reading
A few years ago, I was being interviewed for an accounting position with a company that was clearly experiencing an administrative crisis. The financial results were not reliable (expenses not recognized in the right quarter or even year), cash flow was strained, invoicing was months in arrears, and there were... Continue reading

Originally posted on 02/08/2009 I read an interesting blog post that relates to Two Powerful Questions, in that it makes the point that we often fail to see how the choices we make each day are the choices that create our future. We often hear people complain (and complain a... Continue reading
