I remember the day Harper was born like it was yesterday - and the sense of gratitude I felt towards my own mother after seeing what Arin went through in the delivery room. Ever since, that connection you feel to the generations of parents before you, is something I feel acutely as well. Because each day that passes, I am given a new reason to appreciate those that have played a role in supporting and nurturing me through the ages.
Anil Dash on parenthood
Leave it to Anil to put parenthood in context : ) Although parenthood is indeed quite hard, especially during the initial adjustment/recovery period, one thing I love about it is the intense focus it provides. Right now, my sole purpose everyday is to make sure I heal, get Tesla to school, ta...

This is a dress that really makes me appreciate the importance of a good pair of shoes to match. That is a compliment, in a weird, male, don't know a lot about fashion kinda way.

I certainly wouldn't hurt. But of course what I like about this logo is the foretelling of Perl 6 - which when it comes, if it comes, might be what is needed to spark a mini-renaissance.
Would PERL be popular again if it had a logo like HTML 5?

I am totally bummed about Stargate/SGU. I was never a fan of the franchise, but this one was really well done.
I followed Terriers and Rubicon as well, and enjoyed them. Surprised they are not coming back.
And I *just* discovered Archer. Awesome.
Best of 2010
Well, I think I saw a movie this year. Maybe. I don't really remember. So I think I'll confine this years best of to TV. Favorite returning show: Fringe. This show has only gotten better. The first season was shaky. The second season showed some real promise and introduced some really interestin...
Excellent list.
my top 9 songs of the year
Top tens are so over. Here are my top 9 favorite tracks from 2010. The first two I have to put on there because I'm a white guy over the age of 40. Two songs about telephones, both of which had excellent music videos (go watch them). Rihanna because even though people think she's a robot I t...
@Ken - I wish I could favorite each one of your responses. Twice.
google latitude pm ken norton responds
You know what I love about blogging? That I can toss off a quick kneejerk post about the new Google Latitude iPhone app, and get a thoughtful and well-reasoned response from Ken Norton, the product manager of Google Latitude. (It probably helps that Ken's a friend; I don't think I have every PM...
Also down is Caprica, although I sincerely doubt you would have troubled yourself with watching it. But at least now its official. I guess just in time to make way for another BSG prequal.
One more down
I'm officially giving up on How I Met Your Mother. I have yet to watch any of the five episodes that have aired this year, therefore it fails the DVR test. Usually I only use that for new shows, but in this case, I'm going to use it to justify giving up on HIMYM. Been nice knowing you.
What great memories this stirred up for me. Thank you Natalie!
Favorited: Six Apart
Today is my last day at Six Apart. It's been 3.5 years with an outstandingly clever and humane group of unforgettable friends. I dedicate this Apperceptive/Six Apart-NYC montage to all of you. [WARNING] This is a long, photo-intensive, inside-joke-ridden post. I start things off with the doo...

Good luck Mark. You rock. Seriously, seriously, rock. I can't wait to see what you work on next!
Less talk, more rock
I've been trying to rationalize the decision, but it's clear what feels right to me. With the dissolution of Six Apart into the Say Media cocktail, I choose not to follow in the new adventure of some great people I've worked with during, in a few cases, all 6½ years I've been with the company. W...

I am was a huge fan of Battlestar Galactica, a series that would also be classified as a show with "back 9 problem." And sure enough, the ending sucked. Pretty hard. But I maintain that you don't need to answer everyone's questions, or even resolve the biggest mysteries of a show in order to have a well told and satisfying ending to a show.
In the end, it is not the answers we seek, it is the journey. And there is no journey more disappointing than one that leads to a dead end.
If you are a fan of Battlestar, then I strongly encourage you to read Battlestar's "Daybreak:" The worst ending in the history of on-screen science fiction which discusses how disappointing the ending was and why, and the many simple things that could have been done to fix. A brilliant, if not overly long essay. There are lessons in there for Lost as well.
Playing the back nine, or an extended bad golf metaphor for Lost
I know there's a lot of hate going around about this season of Lost and in particular, last night's episode. As someone who was a fanatic X-Files watcher in the 90's and having seen the Lost guys talk a lot about not repeating the same mistakes of that show's downfall, I think I finally realized...
@Ed Don't get me wrong - I like and revel in mystery. I think any good series will always leave questions unanswered so that the audience is left to speculate and wonder even more. That is what will make a show eternal in my mind - is by giving people something to talk about beyond the life of the series. But when answers are to be provided, let them be definitive in their own right and don't let them betray the intelligence of the audience.
Top 10 things wrong with last night's LOST episode
Here are the ten things I hated about last night's LOST episode, in no particular order. Title deliberately designed to drive as much search, Twitter and Facebook traffic as possible. 1. **Not one, but TWO new characters.** The mother, and then the homicidal mother. Introducing new characters at ...
"Every question you ask will just lead to more questions." Yeah, fuck that. Answers people, we want answers. Not all of them, just enough to know that I didn't waste the last 5 years of my life watching this show.
