(Image: stu_spivack) In accordance with a positively rainy forecast, we planned lots of soup again this week. Though it's barely rained, we are sticking with the plan. And thanks to the babysitter, I had a bit of "free time" to experiment with cooking and preparing a couple dinners at the same time. I definitely appreciated some economies of scale, especially when it came to chopping onions and sauteeing veggies. Here's how the week's looking: Red lentil and carrot-coconut soup (in slow cooker for tonight) Vegetarian tortilla soup (despite my grumbling about the preparation required, the flavor is so spot-on, right-on).... FitBoy 'n' his Dog I'm a little late posting, but here's what's been cooking in our house this week: Easy tortellini soup (fresh tortellini, sauteed garlic with canned tomatoes, broth, and spinach, chard and kale) Taco Tuesday Slow-cooker lentil soup (the one I like has lemon zest/juice and cumin to punch it up) White bean and greens frittata (pretty much whatever's leftover in the pantry and produce bins) The citrus in season is still insanely delicious; I have to hide the satsumas from FitBoy while he's eating -- otherwise that's all he wants. While "orange" isn't the easiest word to... Continue reading

It's definitely winter cooking week here at FFM. Between two(!) new Le Creuset dutch ovens for Christmas and a new Zojirushi rice cooker, I'm inspired. We've been trying a CSA delivery service and while I love the idea of walking down to the vestibule and walking back up the stairs with a box of cleaned organic veggies, I'm afraid our usage and the cost just aren't worth it. In other news, FitBoy has outgrown his dairy allergy -- yay! -- so we're doing a bit more raw milk and cheese in these parts lately. [Having been dairy intolerant for some... Continue reading

Ooh, la la! This is one of those times I wish we still lived on the Central Coast. You may know Rachel as an awesome trainer and dedicated mom. She's kind and humble, so you may not know she's also a talented photographer. Through her photography business, Rachel Neumann Photography, she's offering the perfect Valentine's Day photo package: a tasteful, sexy private boudoir photo shoot. Get pampered and primped with complimentary hair and makeup, then relax and enjoy expressing your sassy side with complimentary champagne, strawberries and chocolate during your 30 minute photo shoot. The best part: you'll receive 5-10... Continue reading

Beth, I'm definitely looking forward to it "even-ing out." I want to be back in the shape where I don't collapse in a heap at the end of the day, just 'cause I exercised! Thanks for your encouragement and I like your mileage updates. Great idea.

For the first time since FitBoy was just a bitty bean inside me, I landed back in the gym this week. The first morning I ran on the treadmill for 20 minutes, plus a warm-up and cool-down, did 25 push-ups, stretched and headed back home so I could take over baby-duty. It was a weird feeling to actually go to a gym -- somewhere other than my garage was *awesome* -- and to check-in at the front desk, validate my parking and request a towel. Being just after January 1, I was in the same boat as a lot of... Continue reading

We've been busy settling into routine around here, after three moves in almost as many months. Yes, I've been absent, almost totally so, from this blog. I've been focusing on our family. FitDad continues to be the main financial support our family through his exciting yet commute-heavy new assignment and FitBoy is an ever-changing source of joy in our lives. Through the recent changes, I'm feeling very encouraged in my roles as mother and "home manager" (à la Simple Mom). And I'm also navigating the maze of my own exercising so I can be "fit for duty."In the new year,... Continue reading

Sorry, still hating the new format. *this* close to migrating to WP. Formatting with wysiwyg is always totally screwed up, no "undo" and font formatting changes never "take." If I wanted to hand code a post, I wouldn't pay for it.

Nearly a month since my last post and we are finally (sort-of) settled into our temporary new home in San Francisco. Last Thursday, our dog, FitBoy and I crammed into our crammed-full-of-boxes car and headed north. First was a stop to drop-off the dog, in hopes that she would get along with a friend's dog who'd offered to watch her while we got settled. All good there; I left with the two dogs running up and down, up and down the backyard hill. The baby screamed all the way into the city, which was foggy and teeming with Giants fans.... I'm also having font issues and formatting issues. I'm open to change, but hate the functionality of the new layout. None of the wysywig editing seems to be working quite right.

I posted this before reading your adorable post (http://gracefulcreative.com/?p=1772) about your two littles and their conversation. I'm glad we're both taking time out to enjoy.

It's 4:30am and my alarm's telling me it's time to get up, time to be accountable to my workout buddies. Aagh. Why do I commit to these things? Why do I get up at 4:30am twice a week to exercise? I've shared before that I have the privilege of hiking twice a week with two awesome women. They're more than exercise buddies or mom-friends -- to me, they represent the perfect intersection of my favorite parts of my life. Each time we meet, we usually mumble hellos and then start cranking up the mountain. After we get warmed-up, we engage... Continue reading

I'll let Rosey answer this for herself if she wants to, but I'll chime in on her program design: In Rosey's case, our plan for her was less about burning calories added by consuming sugar and more about the insulin effect simple carbohydrates (sugars) were having on her body and metabolism. When insulin spikes due to straight sugar consumption, we tend to eat more, then feel sluggish and crash, then repeat. If you're interested in why avoiding sugar is more than just about calories, try searching "metabolic syndrome" or "insulin effect."

I see meal planning squarely in the camp of "not for everyone." Me, I can't make great food choices or stay (kinda) on budget without at least a bit of a compass. Plus, it forces me to try new recipes. Yum.

We all have our vices, don't we...?(sigh.) Post-baby I'm fighting the sweet tooth, too. I love how Rosey walked around with her treat for 30 minutes and got past the craving. Great tip! I may not have mentioned it before, but if Rosey isn't on a "no sugar" day, she doesn't get to eat any sugar past 6:30pm, which helps with sleep and also helps to avoid being vulnerable (tired) and likely to eat more.

Over the holiday weekend, FitSis made a delicious Tempeh Lettuce Tomato (TLT) sandwich. I rarely cook tempeh, but was willing to try it again outside of the wok. Tempeh is a fermented soy product, less processed with tofu, with a stronger flavor and is often more easily digested. Plus, after we ate, I was full for hours. This recipe was a delightful combo of roasted tomatoes, avocado and chipotle-marinated tempeh. Although the recipe recommended a hearty, nutty bread, we opted for sliced sourdough, which was the perfect tang and texture with the smokey tempeh side-by-side creamy avocado and fresh lettuce.... Rani, *such* a beautiful photo. I keep it "unread" in my Reader so I can look at it again. Lovely eye for color.

(Photo: FitDad) Maybe you've noticed some sparse posting and then a complete disappearance. I've been offline since Friday morning. Where have I been? My family's been guest ranchin' it and we were offline in a big way: No cell reception or internet. Thus no meal plan this week. A long weekend of turkey, ranch style beans, salad doused in dressing and biscuits have done me in. I have some fabulous photos and stories to share. In the meantime, here's a photo from this weekend. Add two babies, four kiddos, a grandma, a grandpa and their two kids each, plus spouses... Continue reading

In line with @I Love-Hate, I've found outbound links to other bloggers in the same niche are effective in reaching out, creating link love and have even opened the door for some guest posts. By the way, I think the 31 Days series by Darren was incredibly info-rich and helpful; I still can't believe it was free.

(Photo: go to /theworldsaddress/ instead) Another week flies by and we made only two of the four dishes from last week. I didn't make it to the farm stand this week. Exhaustion took over, and a trip to Trader Joes' was all I could manage. Between FitBoy's teething (please, teeth, come*in!) and my 4:30am wake-up calls for boot camp on Tuesdays and Thursdays I'm re-thinking how much I can put into dinner. I'm shooting for a couple holdovers from last week, plus some easy favorites. Here's what we're having this week: Grilled flatbread pizzas (greens, maybe some summer squash, exotic... - Yep, you're right, Stephanie: crockpot beans are waaay easy. And I've got the black bean stains on the pot to prove it! They turned out a little mushy (which was fine for what I used them for)...any tips on this. I refuse to cook beans without soaking them first, so maybe I should take the water they soak in and absorb into account? Hints? - As far as sprouting goes, Jenna @ Chive Talkin' is the gal to ask. I'll see what I can find in the way of facts, but I can tell you they taste almost nothing like their cooked counterparts when sprouted. Much more fresh and crunchy. Look for a separate post soon. - No sticks for our frozen bananas. I just pull one out of the freezer and it's gone in three bites. What's that you say? There's chocolate in my son's hair? Oops : ) Thanks for stopping by!

(Photo: Josiah Mackenzie) It's been a while since I posted what my current workout routine is. It's still fluid and depends on how much sleep I've gotten lately, but I'm starting to find my groove again. Last Sunday, FitSis and I actually ran a 5k. Not as fast or easy as I'd have liked it to be, but we did it. Not sure I'll pay $35 to run 3 miles again anytime soon, but then again, I haven't been doing much running on my own, either... Here's a weekly run-down: Monday - Hike with two friends at 5:30am (yes, J... Continue reading

Hey Jenna! I have my first batch of black beans in the Crock Pot right now. I found a handout at our co-op with cooking instructions (it was from PCC, and an amended version of the chart is here: http://www.pccnaturalmarkets.com/products/grocery/tips_beans.html#5) (They have the same thing for grains here: http://www.pccnaturalmarkets.com/products/grocery/tips_grains.html#6). I soaked them overnight and put them on high, but it was sputtering so much I just turned it down. We'll see! I'll report back next week. I'm allergic to nuts, too, so I never put nuts in my dishes. I usually substitute seeds or leave 'em out completely. Thanks for hosting the weekly menu exchange!

I should try that. The bee pollen was a little pricey and honey is much more versatile.
