No - what I am saying is that great liberties that have been taken with defining Cloud Computing have made it seem nonsensical. Nonsense [mis]conceptions of the Cloud include: * Cloud == Public Cloud * Cloud == Web 1.0, Traditional Browser-based client access * Cloud has no relationship with Virtualisation This sort of silliness makes the notion of Cloud seem much like a Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland or Through the Looking Glass. The level of misunderstanding such nonsense engenders definitely makes it seem that CC would be nonsense.
That is one of the greatest misconceptions of the Cloud - that Cloud only consists of Third Party, Public services. Clouds can be Private or Hybrid as well as Public. Cloud Computing technically is the provision of "dynamically scalable and often virtualised resources as a service over the Internet on a utility basis."[1] This does not carry a notion from where these resources are provisioned. This is why the Cloud == Public Cloud misconception so skews one's understanding or the relationship of Cloud and Virtualization. Virtualization provides the foundational layer for Cloud, whether Public, Private or Hybrid.

Thanks, Alex. This is the heart of the problem. With the industry so opaque on Cloud, IT's understanding depends on what blog(s) they read, which vendors they work with - they will get different definitions from different parties. Without the proper level setting, any discussion on Cloud gets lost in a conceptual mismatch. Despite the occasional negative reaction I receive for level setting, I insist on it because of this mismatch. Let's talk further, let me know what works for you.

Cheers - and good point. I should update this. There are very good points to be made regarding security and privacy, principally the latter. The technology to address the security concerns either has been or is on the verge of being released. However, privacy is more a matter of policy than technology. With some providers scanning your content to target adverts, and certain organisations engaging in rather questionable practices, I expect that privacy will need to be further legislated before one can trust their data in the Cloud, multi-tenancy, etcetera.
