By Ilina Forget the whole shebang about seeing a man about a horse. You need to saddle up and go see a woman about a will. Do you have a will? You know, that legal document that bequeaths all your assets when you die. That thing you should have done, signed, copied, and put in the safe deposit box nine years ago. No will yet? Really? So much for the whole sound mind bit. Let me drag out my soapbox for a moment. Pardon me while I slip off these heels so I can climb up. Trust me. You're going... Continue reading

By Abby I have a little secret and I'm not sure I should share. If I share, all you local peeps just might start shopping there too and then I'll have to compete with you for all the good stuff. All the good stuff, you say. Where? At Rescued Treasures, the Durham Rescue Mission thrift shoppe -- located on US-70/Glenwood Avenue near Brier Creek. It's here you can find all sorts of awesome deals. I brought home a whole bag of Linus clothing for only $10. It included some pretty nice pants (some still with tags) for $2 each. Right... Every year, the moms board of which I'm a part does a holiday gift exchange. It has to be something handmade and cost under $20. I remember the first year I participated and shook in my shoes thinking that I had to make something for someone else. Something that didn't suck. I've survived without hitting up Etsy so far, but this year, I drew Gail's name. Now, Gail is the queen of craft and beauty. Her photography is art. She can sew anything without a pattern. She makes amazing things from paper. If you can dream it, Gail can make... Continue reading

Holy cow. I cannot take pictures. Seriously. But, here are some pants. And a hat. I'm an awesome craft blogger. Long version: I always make Christmas pj's for the family. Little tradition that started the year I got my sewing machine. They have gotten progressively better over the years - of course, that isn't saying much. The first pairs were hysterical. Huge - as in, Kevin and I could both fit in one pair. Not that we tried. Nope. Not us. Anyhoo, this year, my pal Nita requested some matching jammie pants for her crew. I made her a pair... I'm no liar. This post will result in Shutterfly giving me 50 free cards. Which is awesome. In exchange for their generosity, I'm writing at least 150 words on how awesome they are. Which doesn't mean that I don't believe it. Because I don't jump through hoops for hardly anything - you know I really like Shutterfly. And free Shutterfly is even better. For the past two years, I've used Shutterfly to create our family's Christmas cards. I've made books and calendars too. Their Christmas party invitations have inspired me to check into invitations for the boys' birthday parties in... Continue reading

I am in LOVE with this pattern. Made By Rae designed the most adorable wide leg baby pants with a special panel in the bum for cloth diapered babies. It's amazingly brilliant, and I can't stop making them. When I needed something for Colin to wear at his baptism, I went shopping. I only had a couple of days to figure it out, and all I found was a sweet little cardigan. So, I made some pants. Voila. I'm telling you, this pattern is awesome. A few months ago, I bought some of this brown and blue collection, not having... Continue reading

Are you often on Twitter talking about #SYTYCD? How about #DWS? If you know that those hashtags stand for 'So You Think You Can Dance' and 'Dancing with the Stars', then this giveaway is for you. And, even if you don't watch those shows, seeing a LIVE performance right here in Raleigh is sure to spark your interest. Who knows-- maybe next week it will be you who's tweeting all about ballroom dancing. Burn the Floor, a ballroom dancing spectacular, is coming to Raleigh Memorial Auditorium from November 30 to December 5th. This is your chance to see the Cha-Cha,... Continue reading

Thanks for letting us know, Erica. That sounds really fun!
Hi Leo, Thanks for the feedback. That's an interesting argument for having the meters. I had heard it before when I used to work downtown and there were so many 2 hour street spaces. I don't really buy it though. You can stay in the metered space for 2 hours if you put enough money in, and you still got a ticket when it was free parking if you stayed over two hours. I suppose I'll cancel out that person who will come downtown because they installed parking meters as the person who won't anymore. Thanks for the link to the appeals process. Maybe I'll do it. I'll probably just pay it though - my time had expired after all.

Dear Parking Gods of the City of Raleigh, Last week, I went shopping in downtown Raleigh. It's something I used not to think twice about - going downtown to eat or shop. That has now changed. I understand the need to increase revenue in the city. Everyone is hurting for money, and that includes Raleigh. I get that. When every single 2 hour parking spot in downtown Raleigh disappeared and was replaced by meters, I only groaned a little bit. On this particular rainy morning, I parallel parked on Martin Street. It was raining. I left the baby in the... Continue reading

As I sit here downing Halloween candy, I can't help but wonder where the week has gone. (Likely the same place as the Whoppers. I swore I still had two left in that pack.) It seems the weeks run together and that early start on holiday shopping I swore I was going to have has vanished with the Fall leaves. It's Friday again and here it is -- our ninth week of rounding up the best from all the Triangle Mamas. This week was marked by a Congressional election, an additional temperature drop that sent me scurrying for my scarves,... Continue reading

I'm not sure at what point I decided that Christopher would be Super Why for Halloween this year. It was sometime after he began running through the house singing the Super Readers theme song, and sometime before he creatively turned baby Moses into a clothespin version of Super Why. My initial vision of the costume went something like this: Find green leggings and long sleeve green shirt. Purchase a gold belt. Make a cape. Use a blue gDiaper over the leggings to complete the look. Reminds me of the year I was going to be a Smurf. I figured we... Continue reading

by Ilina Back in the day we sold homemade brownies and layer cakes to raise money for our schools. The pineapple upsidedown cakes went for the highest bid. That was back when we had cake walks at school carnivals. Nowadays in a strange twist we can't bring homemade goodies to school anymore. I guess it's the schoolyard scare of razor blades in apples. I'm thinking no one would have ever been hurt from razor blades in apples anyway because those apples would have been hurled at the houses who gave them out instead of candy. As much as I hate... Hey, hey everybody. It's Friday and that means it's time for a round-up. I figured since Marty was gracious enough to label me a "co-editor" on our business cards, it was about time I contributed a little something. So, here it is without further ado - Round-up #7. It seems many a Triangle Mama is bearing her heart and mind this week. Cyndi, over at My Convertible Life, is admitting that honesty is a good thing even if it hurts a little. It seems her friendship is going to be a lot stronger for it. Ilina made me cry with... Continue reading

One thing I don't do is draw. As in, most first graders can draw better than I ever will. I have a few doodles in my pocket, and I can do some decent lettering, but I DON'T draw. Seriously. Terrible at it. I always wanted to paint though. I love paint. I love the way oil paints smell. I love the way watercolors dry on the paper. I love all of the metal tubes of acrylics. On Saturday mornings, I used to forgo cartoons in favor of Bob Ross and his happy little trees and the mountains they lived on.... Continue reading

Whoa. It has been MONTHS since I last posted here. That makes me sad. I really love this little blog. My little web space as an accidental crafter. Which I just typed "crapter" and had to correct. HMMMMM. I haven't been making much. Well, I did make a baby, which is not exactly crafty, but it is hard, time consuming, and far more fun. Since he came along, I haven't been doing too terribly much in the way of anything. Of course, before little Colin made his arrival in January, I made a couple of birthday shirts for the CC's.... Welcome back to the Friday Roundup, actually occurring on Friday this time! We are on the ball here at Triangle Mamas. I loved Abby's post about being a bloggy fan girl. We all have certain bloggers that we would love to meet, and Abby talks about her encounters with two of them at the Type-A-Mom conference last weekend. Go by and weigh on who your "must meets" are in the blogging community. Andrea devoted a post to her experience at Type-A-Mom as well. She came back with an arsenal of information and a fire for doing great things with her... Continue reading

by Melissa When I first moved to Raleigh a couple years ago, I learned pretty quickly how many great city parks there were in town. That’s why when a new park opened near my house this summer, I had to check it out. It’s quickly become our go-to park. It has a GREAT playground, some actual shade structures and some nice walking and biking trails. The only problem? The name... Landfill District Park Ok, I’ve been in marketing for over 10 years. I’ve named golf clubs, checking accounts and smaller things like newsletters. So I’m having a hard time figuring... Continue reading

Never fear, Triangle Mamas is still a place for mamas to come and share their stories. It's not just a place to let you know what to do and what's going on in the Triangle. I mean, we'll do some of that too, but I am not a reviewer. I just don't have the patience. Some of our other mamas are fabulous at it, but also, it turns out, there is a lovely blog that launched in Aprdoing a great job of sharing events. Do you know about them? Go over and say hello to A Mom in Chapel Hill,... Continue reading

I love looking at Our State magazine and watching shows about all the out of the way secret adventures in North Carolina. The Tarheel Traveler on WRAL is one of my favorite spots to catch, and not just because of Bill's lovely guitar lick on the introduction. UNC-TV also has great shows on the out of the way, easy to over look, quaint, and very cool things to do in North Carolina. In sitting in front of one of these, I found myself mooning over the New Hope Valley Railway. It's just a 30 minute drive from our home near... Continue reading

by Marty It's easy to disappear in blogland. Just as quickly as you set up shop and start blogging, you can simply quit and evaporate into the ethernetsphere. Here's where I started to say, "Recently, I had a baby," but that's not entirely true. I had a baby in January. Almost five months ago. Really, there's nothing recent about that. It was, however, when I stopped blogging. Thankfully, Abby took up the gauntlet here at Triangle Mamas, keeping the posts up and running for me. I can't express enough gratitude to her for that. What my accidental hiatus has taught... Continue reading

By Cyndi Dear Harris Teeter -- You had me at $20 off. Every time I would start to wander, begin to think that your new North Hills East store was too crowded, imagine that I could save more at Kroger, get annoyed about not being able to find things as you shuffled the shelves around -- somehow you always knew. And every time, those magical $20-off-a-$50-purchase coupons would appear in my mailbox. They worked like a charm. So given that you seem to have such a keen understanding of your shoppers' minds, how is it possible that you built a... Continue reading
