Those are two of my favorite albums and Sol has great solo spots on them both! Then again, Sol does a fantastic job on any recording he participates in.
Interview: Sol Schlinger (Part 3)
Sol Schlinger is a modest big-band legend. At first he was surprised I had tracked him down. Then he didn't quite understand why I or anyone else would care about his career. When it finally dawned on him that he must be worthy given my enthusiasm, he said, "Gosh, if I knew then I was going to...
As great as the "Swinging Eye" album by Si Zentnor is, it is not really a "crime jazz" album. A more appropriate selection by Si Zentner would be "From Russia With Love" which contains FRWL, Charade, The James Bond Theme, Burke's Law, Peter Gunn, M Squad, The Fugitive, Dragnet, Mr. Lucky, The 3rd Man Theme, Bond's "007" Theme and The Man with the Golden Arm. The cover even shouts crime jazz: http://www.amazon.com/Russia-Love-James-Bond-Theme/dp/B003UIPTA0/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1317313624&sr=1-1
"More music from Peter Gunn" is also fantastic crime jazz and, much as I like the first album, I sometimes prefer this volume better.
JazzWax List: Detective Jazz II
Earlier this month I posted a list of five favorite swinging action-jazz albums. This brassy genre was popular roughly between 1958 and 1963, with the proliferation of TV shows and movies featuring cops, robbers and private detectives. After posting the first list, I received a crime wave of e...
Art Pepper can also be heard on clarinet on the alternate takes of "Walkin'" on the "Art Pepper + 11" CD issue. "Combo" is also one of my favorite albums. I wish Mancini had done more with this line up and have always wondered how Art got involved with this project since he is the only non-Mancini regular on the recording. Whatever the case, I'm glad he was involved because it gives us more of his wonderful clarinet playing. (Maybe John Williams and/or Dick or Ted Nash can supply an answer).
Art Pepper and the Clarinet
Art Pepper recorded on clarinet sporadically during his career. He doubled on the instrument on his first recording session with Stan Kenton in 1943, in Charles Mingus' bebop big band in 1949 and in Kenton's Innovations Orchestra in 1950. As Laurie Pepper notes below, his decision to perform o...
Barry Galbraith is one of my favorite guitarists. One of my favorite tracks (besides all his work with Hal McKusick)is his solo on Gigi Gryce's "Blue Lights" on Coleman Hawkins' Riverside release of "The Hawk Flies High". I just wish Barry got more solo space on that album (since he plays rhythm only on the rest of the session), but he gets off a good solo on that one tune.
Barry Galbraith: Guitar and the Wind
Over the course of his career, guitarist Barry Galbraith appeared on 594 recording sessions. Yet he made only one album as a featured leader—Guitar and the Wind. The album was recorded over three days in January 1958 for Decca. The fact that Galbraith didn't record more extensively as a featur...
