Physically setting up a blog is not that difficult. A little while back, I wrote a post for small business owners on why start a blog and 25 tips to make it work. It was so popular -- got more than 350 bookmarks on Delicious at the time -- that I also packaged it as a free eBook for portability. What's often difficult is integrating the blog in your existing content and marketing strategy. Where do you start? There are so many things already going on. If you're a marketing or communications professional you probably have a few ideas. When... Continue »

I work at the University of the West of England as an instructor in journalism. Most of the courses I teach on have a strong practice element, meaning a lot of computer use, and the majority of the students are girls/young women. I hear, almost on a weekly basis, the deathless phrase "I'm rubbish with computers." And in all but one notable case, this was uttered by a girl. Where did this idea come from? "The omission of women from the history of computer science perpetuates misconceptions of women as uninterested or incapable in the field [...] rendered invisible." Jennifer... Continue »

In 2008 we were approached by some TypePad bloggers about the possibility of writing a "For Dummies" book for TypePad. Naturally we said - YES! Absolutely. If they were prepared to take on the gargantuan task of capturing all the secrets of this little application onto the printed page then who were we to stop them? We were pleased to offer the technical (and moral) support. via everything.typepad.com How easy we forget that even though it seems "simple to us" it might be so simple to somebody else... well worth looking into for those who want to squeeze everything they... It is no secret that I am an advocate for the Typepad blogging platform. While I have many reasons for this that I plan to discuss through my ongoing Typepad vs Wordpress Series, the foremost one is that when you are running a small business, your focus should be on your business, and blogging with Typepad allows you to do that. Over the last several weeks I have been working my way through the recently published book, Typepad for Dummies, by Melanie Nelson and Shannon Lowe. If you are blogging on Typepad, it is a great resource and reference that... Continue »
