Uh-oh, have to admit I got taken in by one of Jim's headlines. I'll try not to make that mistake again. Thanks for the tip, Neven. In any event, it was the Jakobshavn one, which did seem reasonably alarming, as you said. And Jim, thanks for your diligent work.
Shock news!
There is no shocking news, really. I'm just emulating a way of news reporting as seen in recent months by folks trying to play down the long-term shocking news of Arctic sea ice loss. You know, paid climate science disinformers like Benny Peiser who claimed that the poles aren't melting, twisti...
The Greeks did fine without any fossil fuels, but they had slaves. Don't get me wrong, I am a firm believer in renewable energy, just don't want to skip over that point.
The day the ice cap died
The title of this blog post is actually the title of a piece of science fiction, a short story written by Paul Briggs. Just like a couple of weeks ago when I was asked for advice on an idea for a novel, Paul asked me for some feedback on his short story. I figured posting it here, will generate...
Self sufficiency seems like a good thing, I just wouldn't count on it saving you from a general collapse. There are 9 billion people in the world, and a few hundred of them are likely to find you no matter where you are. Better to slug it out and try to get things to change than spend precious time and resources nurturing the illusion you can survive while hundreds of millions do not.
Getting ready
With the melting season getting ready to go full speed, I'm also busy getting everything ready. First of all on the virtual level by updating the Arctic Sea Ice Graphs page. I've slightly altered the daily graphs page, by adding a couple of links, graphs and category names to make it easier to ...
More on the possible Super El Nino here: http://robertscribbler.wordpress.com/2014/03/25/monster-el-nino-emerging-from-the-depths-nose-of-massive-kelvin-wave-breaks-surface-in-eastern-pacific/
Mission possible
The melting season has just about started (no, I'm not calling the max), but already scientists are out there in different parts of the Arctic doing their thing. Currently there are two eye-catching missions being carried out, both having to do with measuring ice thickness to validate satellite...
I believe Watts's Law, as identified here, is merely a subset of a more general law. I'm not sure I can wordsmith it here, but something like "Any new weather extreme signals the beginning of a recovery from that extreme." Goes well with the Escalator graphic.
The Double Recovery of Arctic Sea Ice
This is a re-post from Dr. Inferno's concise but brilliant analysis: The Double Recovery of Arctic Sea Ice Just two months ago we learned that Arctic Sea Ice Is Normal For The First Time In At Least Seven Years http://stevengoddard.wordpress.com/2012/04/26/nsidc-arctic-ice-extent-normal-for-t...
NSIDC is now showing that current ice extent has crossed below the 2007 line.
Another broken record
The following text was sent to me by Al Rodger: Four years ago, the year 2007 saw the record-breaking summer/autumn melt season in the Arctic. As the Extent of sea ice during the preceding winter maximum was also low, 2007 easily set the record for 12 month rolling average for Arctic Sea Ice Ext...
