If I had the money I would make several improvements and investments for my house that will have longterm financial benefits for myself, as well as a positive environmental effect. I'd retrofit my house with better insulation, I'd install more efficient windows, and I'd put solar thermal and PV panels on the roof. The fact that these things have high upfront costs makes them "splurges", but they also make complete economic sense where I live.
