I've always wondered about this, but never found an answer. Imagine that I cite Smith, James, and Jones (2000), and then Smith, Jason, James, and Jones (2000) later. Now I have two Smith et al.'s (2000). Does that mean I should cite Smith, James, and Jones (2000a) on first and subsequent citations, even though there's only one article with Smith, James, and Jones as authors?
