Stacey! I am so sorry to hear all that you have been through! How wonderful a support system you have. I hope you are feeling much better.
Recovering, Again
June was going so well. My children were having fun at camp, my husband and I had a bit of time to ourselves and we had the whole summer stretching ahead. My prescription-medicine-induced- liver problems seemed to be in the past and I was feeling good. I even cleaned out closets! But the very la...
Ugh - yes that's an important detail, but certainly not one we look for on any kind of regular basis (or irregular for that matter). :)
Not-So-Perfect Timing
Benny's used an insulin pump for almost four years. We love it, but every once in a while there's a hiccup. Sometimes it's the pump and sometimes it's, um, operator error. Our most recent trouble came when Benny's teacher called and said the battery had fallen out. Slade fixed it up ("I MacG...
I may be in the minority, but I stay. I try to blend into the background as much as possible, but even at the age of 8, I think it's too much to ask another parent to be responsible for and I just want Caleb to have fun and not worry about D.
Fun cake/cupcakes!
Birthday Cake To Go?
The 6th birthday party is the one parents around here have somehow agreed we'll start dropping the kiddos off. Unless the invite says Please Stay With Your Child, we just don't. The kids are getting used to their independence, and if something goes wrong, we're a phone call away. Not so simpl...
Looks beautiful and tasty! Thanks for the book reminder! What a perfect fit!
Kicking Off D-Feast Friday
I love the idea of D-Feast Friday. Today is the very first and it's a chance for diabetes bloggers to mention a favorite recipe. Doesn't have to be low carb or "diabetes-friendly" (whatever that means). If you know me, then you know I'm not exactly a whiz in the kitchen. Luckily, I'm marr...
Agree, agree, agree Stacey. Nope, we're not perfect either. But it does seem like a battle. I like how you put it - "when did food become entertainment?" Indeed.
I do my best to encourage good food choices for my kids. I explain why it's important for their health. I also reward them when they make good choices, particularly at a restaurant. They are not reprimanded if they make other choices, but we do make a point of celebrating the good ones. I also make sure we fit in the treats here and there too, in a balanced fashion.
And thank you Jamie Oliver for being a cool guy with a positive message delivered in a cool way. That was huge for all my kids.
Junk Food - No Escape?
I try not to get on my high horse when it comes to food and nutrition. We're certainly not perfect and it's exactly when you start preaching about this stuff that you get busted in the drive-thru. I do have to rant for just a moment. I recently took my son to IHOP for breakfast. That's a big t...
Aw, nice. I'm so happy when kids are able to have moments like this.
Hitting the Links for JDRF
I took Benny to the local Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation golf tournament for the first time. We usually play, but I wanted him to come out and meet some of the people supporting diabetes research. What a great day! First, out on the driving range, Benny got to hit with the big guys. Then...
Yep, I'm on Twitter, but you already knew that ;). It's a lifeline for me. It's so wonderful to communicate with people who understand me even before the really know me.
USA Today's Take on Twitter
A couple of weeks ago, USA Today asked a simple question - What does Twitter mean to you? My response led to a phone call from writer Marco della Cava and a fun conversation about social media. This week, his story ran on the front page(!) and I've received email and phone calls from friends ar...
I think often of what it was like to manage diabetes years ago and what that meant in terms of eating as compared to today. Like you, I am thankful for the devices we have to allow our boys to eat what they want (and mom approves). :)
To Carb Or Not To Carb?
Still going with Diabetes Blog Week. Today's topic - food! Last week at Carowinds, I used my phone to look up the number of carbs in a corn dog. That tells you a lot about the way my family eats (and also about why I love my new phone). The fact that I let my son have a corn dog and that I had ...
