As a last update before our annual holiday card gets posted, finally, I am ready to share that we're expecting Tesla's little sister in May!!! We are thrilled to bits. I am already almost 5 months, and would have shared earlier, but had some reasons. One was I had a miscarriage earlier. I actually had an "empty sac" before that, meaning my body thought I was pregnant, but there was no fetus (did you know this happens 25% of the time?!) It was mighty deceiving, as I felt pregnant immediately. That passed quickly, and I was actually rather ok with... Continue »

Today was Six Apart's last day. It became Say Media this afternoon. And end of an amazing company, and a start of a new one. A colleague said Six Apart was sort of like college. We all worked and played together, and over the years, we started bumping into alum around the city working at new ventures. We are still a group, and are having a big alum gathering later in January to all come together. Current Six Aparters will be with Say Media, but many of those I have worked with, especially from the very early years, have already... Continue »

As the era of Six Apart comes to a close, and I look back on my almost five years here, there is a group that I feel deserves just as much recognition as the rest of us... plus some treats and belly rubs. I'm talking, of course, about the Six Apart Dogs. Dogs have been a huge part of the culture around here for as long as I've been on board. Like them or not, they've always been present. Most were well-behaved, but some would get their wild on from time to time, and that was ok. Sometimes we'd encourage... Continue »

OK, so maybe we sent one of our remote employees - let's call him Hippy McNeckbeard - a replacement laptop with some extraneous equipment included in the box. And by "extraneous" I mean a half-eaten chocolate candy bar, some floppy disks, a postcard of Prince William, an inappropriately adorable background image, CDs with drivers for items you would only find in an antique store, a 2008 SF Giants calendar, and various other useless items. Now, I.T. professionals know that remote employees are a special challenge. These employees are usually very smart, but far too ugly to have in the general... Continue »

Let's see... Quick compose, definitely awesome for it's quickness (and nifty help box): Default blog quick-look, because anything with sparklines is +1000 in my book: Custom color schemes from images? You have to admit, WordPress created a movement around itself via the use of open-source. Posterous is now doing the same thing with its short-form blogging platform. One company that should do so is SixApart. But, it hasn't, *not in... Continue »

While in Google Reader, I found a blog, that linked to another blog, that had an ad, that led me (finally!) to this Etsy store:http://www.etsy.com/shop/imadeyouabeard I have to say these are pretty awesome though I'd have a hard time paying $40 for a whimsical fake beard. However, if someone wanted to get me the "Sad Sea Captain" beard I would wear it to work all day, including to lunch out of the office someplace and take pictures to prove it. Continue »

True, no one asked me. But here's my two cents anyway. Twitter should open up its platform to advertising. That's right, advertising. Forget all this hoo-ha over selling data or paid business accounts or dashboards . . . Twitter has... Continue »
