I enjoy essays, but I am still in need of the how-to's. I have only been gardening for a year, and have so so SO much to learn.
A garden author who swings both ways
WINNERS WILL BE ANNOUNCED SATURDAY AT 10 A.M. EST. Remember Sonia Day’s engaging guest post here about heirloom tomatoes, lawns, native plants, and other hot button topics? You should also know that the Toronto-based garden writer has two recent books out that represent the yin and yang of ga...
I'm on board. I'm a very novice gardener, like Michelle. Last year was my first garden. I have already been blogging my attempts, so this will be great!
I'm looking forward to the great posts.
And I'm glad you made a FB group. That'll make it easier for me to find the blog entries. (I've sent in my request to join.)
I'm looking forward to learning from all of you.
You Can Grow That! Blog Campaign Launches
C.L.'s front garden on Cape Cod. by C.L. Fornari Bloggers need topics to write about and the gardening “industry” could use a boost. I have a proposal to help with both. Every month there will be a “Garden Bloggers Grow That” day. Four words (You Can Grow That!) on the fourth of every month...
I have to say that, whatever the reason, I am glad they severed ties. Thanks for keeping us informed about this travesty.
NWF Abandons its Deal with Scotts
Citing the supposedly unexpected guilty plea by Scotts, the National Wildlife Federation has announced that it's severing ties with Scotts. In not mentioning the overwhelming condemnation of the deal by their supporters, NWF leadership has chosen to behave dickishly even in defeat.
We just moved into our home last year. I am slowly taking out grass and installing my gardens. My husband said I could have the entire area of (currently) yard between the sidewalk and the house. I would love to have beautiful vegetables there, but need more info. Thanks for offering this.
Beautiful No-Mow Yards is just what American gardeners need. And you can win it right here
In the last year or so, we're hearing that there are better uses for our land than turfgrass, that unless it's needed for sport or play, you can save on resources and probably your labor, too, by switching to an array of alternatives - meadows, vegetable gardens, native grasse, and so on. All ...
Soccer and swimming are my faves.

I would choose the multi colored pearl ones. I love those.
Giveaway: Poshlocket Earrings
Champaign tastes on a beer budget? That pretty much sums up the story of my life. Poshlocket feels my pain and seeks to offer quality, top-notch designer jewelry at affordable prices. We were recently sent this pair of Hampton Drop Earrings: They came in that cute pink bag and they are reall...
My son and my middle daughter both love mosaics.
Giveaway: Sticky Mosaics Crowns of Queens
Somehow I missed the "sticky mosaics" part of this when it first arrived and I thought it was all kinds of tiny beads. I have a theory about toys with tiny beads - the more beads that are in the toy someone gives to your child the more they hate you. I'm just sayin'. And with four girls in our...
My most unusual is my dryer lint. (It would be more green to hang the clothes, but there are restrictions.)
From Compost to Compost
I've always taken a very relaxed approach to composting. If it's organic and it's not something the chickens find delectable, it goes in the pile. Ten years ago, a friend gave me a copy of Joan Dye Gussow's lovely garden memoir This Organic LIfe. Gussow is a longtime professor of nutrition at...
I regularly take bags of my stuff and my kids' stuff to the donation center. Even with all this, keeping down the clutter is hard.
I am looking for actual plants for my yard and have found some good deals on Cyber Monday for these things.
Are we shopping yet?
Too. Much. Stuff. If they were honest, all of my friends would admit that, like me, they spend a good amount of time moving stuff around—putting it away, giving it away, and reorganizing it. In my mailbox today was a long line of CyberMonday emails urging me to buy more. On Facebook, another l...
