Life as a 40, oops 50-something--- juggling work, life, children and a great husband who is a stay-at-home-work-your-head-off Dad and living with cancer, and all the various challenges and joys of life as we live it....
Interests: in no particular order: americana music, gardening, my family, cooking (not baking), old buildings (I tend to like them best before they're restored even though I'm all for historic preservation), antiques...mostly 19th century american, reading (sometimes respectable stuff and sometimes anything set in regency england), roadside architecture, mid-19th century american glass, old roads, hosting parties and house concerts in our slightly ramshackle house, laughing at my boys, admiring my boys, missing those I've lost, loving those I have.

My poor Owen just came home sick from school. Poor sweet pea. Leo, on the other hand, headed off to his first day of the new semester yesterday, and got rear ended. Poor sweet pea. His first entry into the... Continue reading

1. I haven't been blogging much, partly because the computer was enlisted for the living room recording studio. Yes. At least on the second day, Rascal stepped in to take charge. 2. On a recent trip I fell in love... Continue reading

A childhood friend wrote me last night, telling me that her mother had passed. Mrs. Roake was a good friend of my parents, and of the whole family. She was one of those people that always looked elegant, but you... Continue reading

In terms of eating, I'm pretty proud of myself. Following this protocol has been really good for me and not SUPER hard, but some times are easier than others. The holiday were hard but I felt lousy when I cheated... Continue reading

Sometimes you have a day in which you go for a long drive, and you stop at an antique mall in a little town to stretch your legs, you get out of the car and look around, and kitty corner... Continue reading

Ernie and I aren't really ones for big gifts for each other at Christmas. Somehow, we've been together so long and know each other so well, and do things for one another throughout the year, that Christmas presents just aren't... Continue reading

2018 will not go down as one of my favorite years. It was a difficult year both physically and emotionally, but DAMNED if I didn't smile all the way through the little slideshow of pictures from it that I just... Continue reading

I'm fighting to stay awake today. I don't know why. I didn't sleep wonderfully, but that's not unusual. The grey day perhaps. The Christmas break laziness continues. It's not really the squalor of Christmas past however, there are no Lego... Continue reading

I was determined to make a meat pie, or a tourtière, that I could eat this Christmas. If you know me, you know this is a holiday tradition that I hold dear. I didn't attempt it at Thanksgiving....between the pie... Continue reading

It was a good Christmas. A few tense moments, as there are at any family Christmas, and we got Owen the wrong pick up for his guitar, and Rascal broke Ernie's new Rodney Crowell Christmas mug, and a candlestick, but... Continue reading

The last day or two have not been particularly uplifting (and Typepad keeps wanting to autocorrect uplifting. Uplifting is a word, I swear). Lots of people were mad at me, family included, and yeah, yeah, yeah....I get that I was... Continue reading

Maybe I was just in a bad mood today, but Seth Fein's comments about the Burnham Mansion in Smile Politely today saddened me greatly. Here are my thoughts. Dear Seth, I think you know that I love you dearly, and... Continue reading

I was terribly smitten with the Christmas trees in Gibson City and Paxton the other day and wanted to see them at night, so last night I dragged Ernie out as dusk approached. We hit Paxton first and the town... Continue reading

I haven't been blogging quite as much because my computer seems to be slowly dying. Sigh. Yes, first my beloved laptop, and now this. It's an iMac from 2011 and it keeps randomly turning off and is getting fussier and... Continue reading

We finally decorated the tree the other night. Well, about 2/3 of the ornaments are on. We never manage to get them all on at one time. The boys flipped a coin, and Owen won, so the angel is on... Continue reading

1. This doesn't really make sense to me, but my sense of smell seems to be much stronger of late, since I started the elimination diet. Of course this leads me to complaining about the scented trash bags poor Ernie... Continue reading

1. Every so often I find myself eating something and wondering how it can possibly be so good. This elimination diet has truly taught me the value, and pleasure, of simple food. As I shoveled my lunch in yesterday (I... Continue reading

Friday again, but it's been a lovely week. Wednesday night we went to the last community dinner at Uni Place. It was the last day of Owen's internship there and we couldn't have been more proud of him. We were... Continue reading
