Life as a 40, oops 50-something--- juggling work, life, children and a great husband who is a stay-at-home-work-your-head-off Dad and living with cancer, and all the various challenges and joys of life as we live it....
Interests: in no particular order: americana music, gardening, my family, cooking (not baking), old buildings (I tend to like them best before they're restored even though I'm all for historic preservation), antiques...mostly 19th century american, reading (sometimes respectable stuff and sometimes anything set in regency england), roadside architecture, mid-19th century american glass, old roads, hosting parties and house concerts in our slightly ramshackle house, laughing at my boys, admiring my boys, missing those I've lost, loving those I have.

I eat a lot of fish these days. It can get expensive though, so I tend to buy a lot of frozen fish at Aldi's because much of it is certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (yay!). We restrict ourselves... Continue reading

Sometimes a delightful email just pops into my inbox. When that happens I am reminded that what I write here is really out there in the world. I mostly write for my own pleasure, for the chance to process what... Continue reading

1. For some reason this little suggestion on Facebook really amused me. I want to know what it's about too. 2. Note: if you cook something in a cast iron pan for breakfast....try turning off the pan when you leave... Continue reading

You are so kind Chris! I don't do much photo editing...just a bit, and nothing fancy, so all credit probably goes to my camera!

I had the nicest day yesterday. Woke up early, read for awhile, and then dozed back off. Owen had texted me from work the night before, asking if he could get his ear pierced on Saturday. I said sure and... Continue reading

We did some more wandering this week. Indiana and a smidgen of Ohio. The Casey's weren't plentiful, so we couldn't use that as our marker. We did pass four Confederate flags however, so that's a marker of sorts when you're... Continue reading

I saw my functional medicine doctor today and they seemed happy with how I'm doing. Which is good, because I'M happy with how I'm doing. I feel so much better than I did last year that it seems as though... Continue reading

We drove through Kinderhook, Illinois and I fell in love with its little post office. I was mightily impressed with Dr. Dechow's memory wall. People came from miles around to see the "memory wall" that Dr. P. H. Dechow has... Continue reading

Verdurette. I'd never heard the word. Evidently it is a French method of making vegetable stock. However, it is also this glorious house. Verdurette. I'd come across a picture of this house with some general directions so I took to... Continue reading

Oh, I LOVDE the idea of Button Street. Your mother sounds wonderful. I have yet to go to St. Francisville. It's on my list.

I felt the need to clear my head, so I convinced Ernie to come along and wander some roads with me. He is simply the best creature in the world. We measure our days in Casey's. We hit a high... Continue reading

Although I am sometimes roundly mocked for this, I like winter. I love snow. I like cold. I like the change your senses go through in the winter. However, even I am ready for Spring. I have seen the peonies... Continue reading

Morning smoothie ingredients. Blackberries from Farmer Greg's Claybank Farms. I got up early because Ernie had an early doctor's appointment. Got there and sat in the room and watched the doctor do an exam and thought about how sick to... Continue reading

I'm here, slogging along. Owen's sick and I'm down with a bit of it too. Just a cold and aches kind of thing. I have no news so I will share the list I have on my phone of Blog... Continue reading

I continue to feel pretty good----and about a million times better, but I do find that I am still figuring out what I can handle and what I can't. In doing so I have come to realize that I am... Continue reading

Good heavens, I haven't posted much lately (and I can hear my mother's voice as I write 'good heavens,' something I normally never say, but she did). I've had a hard time commandeering the computer...hence my silence. Owen tends to... Continue reading

I've always loved that line from Steve Earle's Week of Living Dangerously. And that's kinda what Owen did, as he explained it, he just went straight instead of going right. Straight past the high school, on to West Side Park,... Continue reading

I was delighted with my dinner last night. I just had a nibble of the leftovers with my smoothie (man, these organic raspberries are tart...as much as I love raspberries, I think cherries are still my favorite for smoothies). I... Continue reading

The other day I looked in the bathroom mirror and blinked, and I noticed that I seemed to have eyelashes again. Now, they're not thick and luxuriant, nothing to write home about, but they feel like a miracle to me.... Continue reading

1. Our poor little uninsulated, drafty old house can only do so much in this cold, or I guess I should say our trusty furnace can only do so much in this house. Either way, I am grateful for the... Continue reading

We drive around small towns and old roads and we find bits of stories. Sometimes we never know what the story really was. Sometimes we do. In Old Shawneetown, we found the word 'hotel' in stones, next to the levee.... Continue reading

Our dinners tend to be a big plate of greens, topped with whatever else we made. It's not beautiful, but it's damned good. Inspired by the roast lemon/ground beef dinner I made, I roasted some oranges. Damn they were beautiful....400... Continue reading
