Lover of backroads, americana, 19th century American glass, architecture, neon, and my guys.
Interests: in no particular order: americana music, gardening, my family, cooking (not baking), old buildings (I tend to like them best before they're restored even though I'm all for historic preservation), antiques...mostly 19th century american, reading (sometimes respectable stuff and sometimes anything set in regency england), roadside architecture, mid-19th century american glass, old roads, hosting parties and house concerts in our slightly ramshackle house, laughing at my boys, admiring my boys, missing those I've lost, loving those I have.

Our dear friends Pat and Doug stopped by the house the other day. It was a lovely treat. We hadn't seen Pat in too long, and Doug came bearing gifts: a cool old book on trains from the 40's for... Continue reading

Long, long day today...trying to juggle too many things. Aren't we all though? Aren't we all? If you are part of our family, you would hear that in Tom Hanks's voice, as.the bum in the Polar Express. That's what living... Continue reading

1. Yesterday we got up, did a bit around the house and then headed to Carle. Ernie had two doctors appointments. In between, we went and got some iced tea; over to Epstein's Bagels as it was just a block... Continue reading

Absolutely extraordinary. E.X.T.R.A.O.R.D.I.N.A.R.Y. A mind-blowingly great show from Gretchen Peters and Barry Walsh last night. All I could think as I sat through the show grinning like an idiot was that if I could be a songwriter and musician, I... Continue reading

I met Rick Graves a few years back when I sat next to him at an Ian Hunter show at City Winery. I could tell he was taking great pictures so I asked him his name. Since then we've run... Continue reading

Today is the DAY! Gretchen Peters and Barry Walsh! And, might I note that it will be a COOL alternative to the wonderful, but OUTSIDE, KCPA event at Research Park. Air conditioning, great food, fantastic music. I NEED this. What... Continue reading

I rarely leave a post unfinished and unpublished. As you well know, I throw everything on here whether it's interesting or not. Ha! It's just my life, splat, on a computer screen. Over the last several days, however, I've abandoned... Continue reading

Yesterday was just one of those days. Had planned to go to a gathering but Ernie wasn't feeling great from Friday's procedure. I did a bit of work, read, and fidgeted. I was at loose ends and wanted to get... Continue reading

Thank God for teenagers that wake up when you call them before 8 in the morning. I'm sitting here at the Carle Heart and Vascular Institute so Ernie can have a procedure done. He needs to wear a compression stocking... Continue reading

Oh, Rascal. Lamb loin chops (yay Aldi), seared in olive oil, sprinkled with lemon juice and salt. I'm so glad that kids still buy candy at the Huber's window. Purple cabbage love. Continue reading

We all went to see Toy Story 4 yesterday. If I can be proud of anything, I think the fact that my 19-year-old and 17-year-old agreed to go see that with us is right up there. They did insist on... Continue reading

Ernie managed to get me up early and off to the farmer's market yesterday. I even got TWO hugs from Greg from Claybank Farms. Came home with a haul....blue kale, bok choy, cucumbers, green beans, tomatoes, red potatoes, AND raspberries!... Continue reading

I don't get on Twitter too often. My only tweets are mentions of house concerts, and even those are random and sparse. I did hop on over there yesterday to check in on what was going on DC with tanks... Continue reading

Good God but the supposedly non-toxic bug spray I got doesn't work at all. I smelled good though...essential oils and all that. I'm TRYING not to scratch. Sigh. Apart from that, it was a lovely Fourth. We had a quiet,... Continue reading

1. Too much arugula in my smoothie today. I used a spinach/arugula mix, which I often do, and it seemed to be heavier on arugula than usual. Oh well...still pretty good. 2. One last comment on the whole clean eating... Continue reading

1. I'm still pondering the whole clean-eating-is-classist-and-racist thing. Here is one article, from Vice. One of the places they lose me is when they talk about clean eating being for weight loss. I don't think it has a damn thing... Continue reading

Huh. So I got bashed today (nicely) for using the phrase 'clean eating,' and told that it was classist and racist. Sigh. And on a day I already had written about not feeling well and struggling with balance. Sometimes life... Continue reading

I think my cold is finally receding although I wake up coughing every morning. What amazes me is how my body can keep producing this gunk. Where does it come from? How can I KEEP blowing my nose? Don't answer... Continue reading

I seem to be posting a lot about food. Well, I guess that's because I've been really enjoying cooking of late. I feel like I am continuing to learn about flavors since I began this clean eating journey. Although many... Continue reading

Ok...the name of this recipe sounds a bit odd.... Lettuce with hot beef dressing? I know, but it's really good! I used grass-fed ground beef, and subbed coconut aminos for soy sauce, as well as skipping garlic, sigh. I'm sure... Continue reading
