Lover of backroads, americana, 19th century American glass, architecture, neon, and my guys.
Interests: in no particular order: americana music, gardening, my family, cooking (not baking), old buildings (I tend to like them best before they're restored even though I'm all for historic preservation), antiques...mostly 19th century american, reading (sometimes respectable stuff and sometimes anything set in regency england), roadside architecture, mid-19th century american glass, old roads, hosting parties and house concerts in our slightly ramshackle house, laughing at my boys, admiring my boys, missing those I've lost, loving those I have.

Thank you for saying that. I can't think of anything to be in awe of about me, but I DO know how to love really hard. My love to you. Thinking so much of Gine, too.

Welp. 2020 is starting out a bit rough. Generally speaking, February is my least favorite month on emotional terms. God help me if it's any worse than January. I'm ASSUMING it won't be but then again, you know what they... Continue reading

January 17. The Cancer Center's Christmas decorations come down and we celebrate the mm-mmmmmth anniversary of the day we met. Ok, ok. Thirty-nine freaking years. DO keep in mind that I was an infant. It was the weekend before the... Continue reading

My baby is sitting across the room dozing. He was reading the paper with Bob at his side, but now they are both dozing on and off. This might be the beginning of the effects of chemo or it could... Continue reading

We went out for breakfast again. I know, not a good habit---we normally only do diner breakfasts when we're traveling. As Ernie noted the other day though, there's something about doing this that reclaims some kind of normalcy to our... Continue reading

Absolutely nothing. Well, that's not true. Hair communicates a lot about us. Not always, but it CAN communicate a hell of a lot. Ernie's hair has always said something for him. I mean, he saw the Beatles on Ed Sullivan.... Continue reading

1. Glorious salad supplies from our dear friend, Sandra. Made for a heavenly salad. The next morning I knew I had to eat because the Cancer Center doesn't seem to have gluten free snacks. I forced myself to make something... Continue reading

Cancer could be a god damn full-time job. Yesterday when I woke up I felt like my body was concrete or metal that had been welded to the bed. It took incredible will power to force myself to get up... Continue reading

Yesterday we called a family meeting of sorts. We went through the chemo info so we could all know some of the things to expect. It was just good to talk it through. Most of it was things we already... Continue reading

I've always been somewhat of a failed preservationist. For whatever reason, I much prefer buildings before they are restored. Now, mind you, that's an impractical mindset. If I love a building then, of course, I want it restored and used... Continue reading

1. New radiation time slot. Friendlier lot although someone had my favorite seat. I will try to adapt. AND Ernie found that he had indeed left his pocket knife in the locker yesterday. Yay. It's getting a bit faded. It... Continue reading

I'd forgotten the Groundhog Day aspect of radiation. The same time every day, the same people before you, the same people after you, the same staff, the same waiting room, the same folks, like me, waiting for their loved ones.... Continue reading

When Ernie was first diagnosed with cancer it was an incredible shock. It was 2004. The boys were tiny little things. Ernie was young to be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and of course, it was a relatively aggressive version. It... Continue reading

1. My brain just isn't functioning. I did some work today but after getting done what had to be done I stopped because I couldn't seem to string two words together. 2. I keep wanting to call my mother, or... Continue reading

It felt so good to have Ernie back home last night. We were both stupidly tired so mindless watching of the Golden Globes was perfect. We even made it to the end before collapsing into bed. And our beloved friend... Continue reading

After our delightful breakfast in Monroe, we headed out to our first stop, Nick Engelbert's Grandview. It's a site of sculpture and architectural outsider detail that was started in the 1930's. Much of it is restored or recreated. I believe... Continue reading

We're holed up down here in radiology. The doctor has finished his treatment plan and Ernie should get his first treatment shortly. As we chatted with the radiologist he mentioned that they don't usually release acute patients over the weekend.... Continue reading

1. It was SO hot. 2. Everybody was incredibly kind. 3. By the last team of doctors, I'd lost my friendliness quotient, however. 4. Having your own oncologist walk in instead of the ER doc is not a good sign.... Continue reading
