I sometimes use the Noise-Ninja plugin in Photoshop and it can do a good job of identifying noisy areas and removing some of it. But too often it flattens the feather details of the bird. For this reason, I usually prefer to apply noise reduction only to the background where it doesn't matter, and not to the bird where I want to preserve as much fine detail as possible.
