Are we modern-day humans much too focused on physical appearance (our own and that of others)? For example, given the Bible's description of how John the Baptist dressed and how he was the one Jesus chose to baptize Him, that should give us a perspective on the lack of importance to appearance. Moreover, the fact that there is no description of the physical appearance of Jesus in the Bible speaks volumes. Jeff
Joan, I'm not sure if Ramona is participating in the daily readings this year. I think the developer of this blog (Mike) is posting Ramona's daily posts that she actually wrote in prior years (probably to help us think about the verses and to encourage us to also make thoughtful posts). Jeff
I agree wholeheartedly with Carol about the 10 Commandments, especially since Jesus reaffirmed the importance of them when he was on earth. I love how Jesus essentially summarizes the 10 Commandments -- reference Mt 22:34-40 in yesterday's reading: 34 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. 35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36 ‘Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?’ 37 Jesus replied: ‘“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.”[a] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: “Love your neighbour as yourself.”[b] 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.’ Godspeed, Jeff
Question 1: When I have a question about a particular verse, where should I go online to read informed commentary about that verse? For example, today I am confused by the second sentence of Genesis 3:15 when God says to the serpent: "From now on, you and the woman will be enemies, and your offspring and her offspring will be enemies. He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel." Question 2: When I want to find other verses in the Bible that refer to the same topic as a particular verse, how should I do that? For example, regarding Genesis 4:19 regarding Lamech's polygamy, what other Biblical verses provide God's/Jesus' will and teachings about polygamy? Thank you to anyone who replies, Jeff (Annandale, Virginia)
