The value to be found in the serious writing of Michael Henry Adams is, in full fact, his concern with the historical sociology of our culture, not only its architectural evidences. That he is seen by Adam Gopnick, of the New Yorker, as capable of bringing to life the history, the evolution, of Harlem, when precious few others have concerned themselves with it, and has done it so positively, suggests we have a writer who labors with love for his subject and makes his review, in architectural terms, provident of social insights that are of substantial interest and value to us all. He does consider his Harlem, Lost and Found, An Architectural and Social History, 1765 to 1950, as a 'labor of love, a gift to myself and to the community'. His community is enlarged through his integration of instructive photography and his threading of narrative history, through persons and periods, making us cognizant of the humanity that preceded us, and perhaps giving us insights in making our more current decisions.
