Hi, I have an ex-bootneck friend of mine reporting 23 degrees C in Tromso Norway today
If this is real...
As usual, it's all about the if. Allow me to explain what this is about: In the first Arctic Sea Ice update of the 2013 melting season that was posted a couple of days ago, I announced that a cyclone was forecasted to move over the Arctic Basin and stay there for a while. It's been there for a c...
Where did the Daily Graphs go?
2012/2013 Winter Analysis
The melting season is about to shift one gear higher, and so I thought it'd be useful to have a comprehensive look at this past winter (just like we did last year). As we saw in this recent PIOMAS update, it seems that this year's conditions for ice formation were better over on the Siberian s...
You saw it first here folks, sand and water to produce hydrogen with no additional energy needed, how long until this gets buried by the oil cartels?

2013 Open thread #1
I was planning on writing posts more regularly, but reality forbids. So here's an open thread for all of your off-topic banter. source: Space Daily Will be back next week when I get an Internet connection in our new apartment. There's plenty to write about: that science report, the lower albe...
Hi
Not sure if this has been listed yet.
Sea-level rise from polar ice melt finally quantified

Interesting that SLR of 11mm in 2 decades. Given the acceleration of the loss of the sea ice up and the record warming of the GIS we could be in for some shitty winters in coastal regions everywhere in the next 30 years.
"We can now say for sure that Antarctica is losing ice and we can see how the rate of loss from Greenland is going up over the same period as well," he added.
As Sea Ice Declines, Winter Shifts in N. Alaska
As winter sets in, the Arctic Ocean freezes up. But because waters near the continental land masses warm up so much during the melting season (see for instance this image from August 11th 2012), they have to give off a lot of heat before they're cold enough to freeze. The waters warm up so muc...
Werther, Bluesky thank you. It seems as though climate change is not really something that needs debating anymore but more of something that needs preparation for.
A New Climate State: Arctic Sea Ice 2012 (video)
Talking about cool, yet depressing vids: Peter Sinclair from the Climate Denial Crock of the Week blog has produced a new video for The Yale Forum on Climate Change & The Media (link) that covers this melting season and shows the reactions from several experts: Great stuff. Thank you, Peter!
Hi not a regular poster as I have little to add given the quality of the posts on here!
Could there be any correlation between the last record minimum and the flooding in the UK in 2007 (june /july) and this years record minimum and the current UK floods?

Hi any ideas on these temperature increases on the GIS as a whole in relation to sea level rise?
The wet side of Greenland
When writing The dark side of Greenland, a recent blog post on decreasing reflectivity of the Greenland ice sheet, with images comparing the southwest of Greenland with satellite images from previous years, I of course realized that when that ice sheet becomes less reflective, it will soak up mo...
Hi a layman's question for you is there a point where the thickness of the ice will allow for;
wind and wave movement to break it up and stop it acting as a pack?
If so will that reduce the albedo? Just thinking of how a pond melts.(albeit a big pond!)
PIOMAS May 2012
Another month has passed and so here is the updated Arctic sea ice volume graph as calculated by the Pan-Arctic Ice Ocean Modeling and Assimilation System (PIOMAS) at the Polar Science Center: This year's trend line dipped below last year's only to go up again in the first two weeks of April, ...
Thanks guys much appreciated.
Now I know the context I will refer to the daily graphs in future.
Cheers :)
Cryosphere Today sea ice area: maximum reached
I finally feel confident enough to call the maximum for the Cryosphere Today sea ice area data set*: graph comes from the Pogoda i Klimat blog More than two weeks have passed since I wrote the following: ECMWF is showing a big high taking over the Barents/Kara regions 5 from days from now, wit...
Hi how accurate are the "realtime" images from http://www.fourmilab.ch/cgi-bin/Earth ?
If they are acurate there seems to be a big difference between what's seen on the images here and the sea ice area from cryosphere today. appreciate your patience as I'm a complete layman on this a most interesting topic.
