Penn State coach, "it's time to punch back."
[Penn State coach Bill O'Brien] spoke with members of the news media for nearly two hours, addressing the uncertainties that have clouded the future of the Penn State football program since it was hit with N.C.A.A. sanctions on Monday. “I felt like it was important to try to get out in front,” O’Brien said. “We took a lot of punches. Penn State has taken a lot of punches over the last six months, and it’s time to punch back.” New York Times I think that metaphor suffers when you're the one punching yourself in the face. Maybe just stopping all... Continue reading

Israel can expect a high-five from Romney if they bomb Iran
Jerusalem (CNN) - Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney would "respect" a unilateral Israeli strike on Iran unilaterally should the Islamic republic develop nuclear weapons, Romney’s foreign policy adviser told reporters Sunday. Or maybe just a shout on his next record, I really don't know what "respect a unilateral strike" means. Continue reading

Nothing can be done? What if 5,000 additional people go to medical school and become doctors?
“We have a shortage of every kind of doctor, except for plastic surgeons and dermatologists,” said Dr. G. Richard Olds, the dean of the new medical school at the University of California, Riverside, founded in part to address the region’s doctor shortage. “We’ll have a 5,000-physician shortage in 10 years, no matter what anybody does.” New York Times Another option would be to loosen the definition of "physician." For example, a doctor of humanities would be qualified to conduct basic diagnostics or prescribe medicine. Obviously a DFA wouldn't crack open a chest cavity, but s/he could draw some blood and... Tom Friedman is so high
Lord knows I am rooting for the opposition forces in Syria to quickly prevail on their own and turn out to be as democratically inclined as we hope. But the chances of this best-of-all-possible outcomes is low. That’s because Syria is a lot like Iraq. Indeed, Syria is Iraq’s twin — a multisectarian, minority-ruled dictatorship that was held together by an iron fist under Baathist ideology. And, for me, the lesson of Iraq is quite simple: You can’t go from Saddam to Switzerland without getting stuck in Hobbes — a war of all against all — unless you have a... Continue reading

If you need any additional evidence of the NRA's complete victory on gun rights, look no further than Obama's statement on CO. He mentions the word "gun" zero fucking times. Obama's full statement Continue reading

Go Somalia, Go
Apparently Somalia has an Olympic squad (!!); on that squad is a woman who trained for the 800M on the streets of Mogadishu. "Somalia has had no real government for the last 20 years, but determination, good fortune and hope will take us close to victory," said 18-year-old female athlete Zamzam Mohamud Farah. The training facilities are pock-marked with bullet holes from years of brutal conflict, but as the four athletes -- two men and two women -- stride out in training, they offer a glimmer of hope for the war-ravaged nation. Link Jesus. Go team, go. Continue reading

Romney Gets Booed at NAACP
On Wednesday Mitt Romney delivered a speech at the NAACP and was roundly booed for reasons that are totally irrelevant [Maddow]. They're irrelevant because despite the circle-jerk of theories as to why or how this could have happened, the only thing that matters is the headline. Republicans generally have to be sneaky with their Tea Party ball-tickling, especially in a general election. But Romney is about as delicate as a timpani solo, so he needs a brassy headline to demonstrate that blacks don't like him and he doesn't like blacks (though in my heart I don't think Romney has a... This guy has a career ahead of him in politics
“Now there is medication, so fewer people are dying of AIDS,” Monamela explained. “I’m not very happy because this is my future.” Realizing that this did not sound quite right, he started again: “Although the medication has affected my business, I’m happy because I don’t want to see people dying of AIDS.” The Coffin-Maker Benchmark Delicate re-phrase. Getting old
I'm visiting my grandparents in Sarasota. My grandma is 83, grandpa 89. Recently they hit Dillards for new clothes, grandpa had zero interest in using a fitting room. Accordingly, he measured his waist and inseam with a tape measure and selected pants that matched. 36" waist, 30" inseam. As you might expect, they didn't fit. Too long. Getting old can't be easy, but it's better than the alternative. Continue reading

Unintended Consequences of "Really!?!" with Seth & Amy
I enjoy the sketch, but it's yielded a legion of yoyos who think that just saying "really?" passes for astute social commentary. For example, saying "Really, Michigan State Representative Mike Callton? "Vagina" is an offensive word? Really??" Is not commentary. It's just a rhetorical question. Continue reading
