Step 1: Make these 1024x1024. Step 2: Rename them iPad backgrounds. Step 3: Profit!
(Seriously, though, these would make nice desktops if you can make them into landscape [and/or wide-screen] formats.)

Perhaps I'm unusual in the 'give up and go away' behavior, but it's ironic that turning on anonymous comments might actually reduce the total number of comments you get.
Crazily common on TypePad blogs: Type comment. See I'm not logged in. Log in (OpenID). Comment is lost. Close window.
This is maddening. It seems like TypePad should be able to store my comment while they send me away to log in at myopenid, but instead, when I come back, I'm presented with a blank comment form. 90% of the time, I decide it's not worth the effort of recomposing my thoughts. I suppose that might ...

This is maddening. It seems like TypePad should be able to store my comment while they send me away to log in at myopenid, but instead, when I come back, I'm presented with a blank comment form. 90% of the time, I decide it's not worth the effort of recomposing my thoughts. I suppose that might be a win overall for the Internet, but then again, it inspires rambling such as this. I'm fairly certain there's a way to preserve that comment text. I know there are limitations in lengths of query strings, cookies are clumsy, and popping up a new log in window has issues, but seriously, is it at all acceptable that it just ditches the text? (And yes, I could also be smarter about noticing I'm not logged in before I jot down my thoughts, but it... Continue reading

That would make for a great ad for Duck (if they could confirm it was their brand).
Working on the Moon - Fastenings: Duct Tape
Most famously, duct tape was used in the construction of a makeshift device that let Command Module lithium hydroxide canisters be used with the LM Enviromental Control System to prevent a build up of carbon dioxide during Apollo 13. It was also used for such purposes as making a replacment fen...
He sounds bitter: “This is actual science, not ‘Avatar,’ ” said Richard O. Prum, an evolutionary biologist at Yale and co-author of the new study, published in Science.

Sweet Dino Ink
via jannikeviveka.wordpress.com I love dinosaur tattoos. These ones are pretty great. Here's my dinosaur tattoo. Here's my dinosaur tattoos pool on flickr. Here's my old blog, about 60% devoted to dinosaur tattoos (posting this here instead of there marks an historic shift in my blogging). Th...

My Favorites
It's hard to take her seriously after she admits to regularly pouring eggnog in her coffee.
But seriously, I think the take here is along the lines of your hypocrisy hypothesis, but in that she's trying to justify her arbitrariness and inconsistency by insisting that anyone making any choices is making arbitrary and inconsistent ones.
The funny thing is, I agree with her, but not because of this plant hoo-ha. It's more that once you start tracking down animal use in foods, you inevitably realize you're going to have to draw a line somewhere. Do you eat foods transported to the grocery store by vehicles using trucks that have vulcanized rubber tires? "Although not present in the finished product, animal fats are typically used as lubricants in the vulcanization process."
It's likely impossible to live completely, truly vegan (especially if you consider insects, or especially bacteria), but there are better arguments for that than to suggest that it's unethical to eat a plant because it responds to stimuli.
Basics - Another Challenge for Ethical Eating - Plants Want to Live, Too - NYTimes.com
But before we cede the entire moral penthouse to “committed vegetarians” and “strong ethical vegans,” we might consider that plants no more aspire to being stir-fried in a wok than a hog aspires to being peppercorn-studded in my Christmas clay pot. This is not meant as a trite argument or a chuck...
@mayorslay Any thoughts on the apparent city experiment picking up trash once a week?
From our alderman (ward 23), but apparently across the whole city: I've recently been getting calls about the trash pickup or should I say the lack of trash pickup. In order to save money the street department is experimenting with going to once a week trash pickup. This may or may not work, the plan is to see whether not adding more Dumpsters in the areas were heavier trash is picked up would make difference. They estimate they would save approximately one million dollars if this plan works. At a time when we're going to furlough employees this could be an important job saving action. If the trash pickup is a problem for you please let me know. I will work to get extra Dumpsters in the alleys or possibly larger Dumpsters in some areas. If this does not work... Continue reading

Does anyone use Typepad Micro as a Twitter posting app? It's not quite doable for me.
I mentioned before that Typepad has a simple/easy way to share a post on a related Twitter account. That works well for people wanting to tweet about their blog posts and pull people into visiting their blog. It's not quite what I want to do, but it's possible Typepad could tweak that feature more easily then my previous Twitter-to-Typepad thought: I could use the TypePad Compose page (and/or bookmarklet), write my Tweet as the headline, and click 'Share this post.' Presumably body text isn't required. The main problem here is that the shared Twitter post has a link back to the specific blog post. That's not ideal for a couple reasons: The blog post linked might often have no additional content, which leads to a weird/confusing/annoying follower interaction for those who click the link. The URL uses up precious characters.... Continue reading

Someday I'll have a blog to use as for extras & discussion of some of my Tweets…But not yet.
How I'd love to use this blog - I post to Twitter, and end my tweet with #db (for davebug, though #tp or whatever would work), like so: Settled on Pratt knot as my go-to. It's a quirky method but ends with a good medium thickness, symmetrical knot. #db Then that would post here as the title of a new blog post, with no content. I would head over here, edit the content to add something like this: and save it out for friends to comment on. Unfortunately, there's no such Twitter-to-Typepad functionality right now. I could go in reverse, post that thing here and have it send to Twitter, but I'm not really interested in driving my Twitter friends to my blog (since that would, presumably, largely include a URL here), but would rather think of this blog as...
