I bought this pair of molded plastic heads thinking they might have been part of an amusement park ride. On the back of the heads, they are stamped DICK WIKEN 1953. So of course I researched them, and there's quite a bit of info on the sculptor, who is listed in Who's Who in American Art. Dick Wiken (1913-1985) was a Milwaukee based designer and sculptor for architecture, industry and commerce. As a young artist during the Depression, he joined the WPA Doll Unit and was the creator of the face of the Wisconsin state doll. He was prominent enough to have been photographed for a beer ad that appeared nationally. After reading whatever I could find on the web, a very convoluted post on a 'Planet Christmas' forum referred to some 'Dick Wiken choir heads' and I think that's what they are. That explains the cartoonish expressions. For sale tomorrow in Fort Greene at booth L15.

One last note on a vintage Eames shell chair or any fiberglass chair from the period. Note the fibers and the contrast on this chair. This is very desirable, and I've heard it referred to as 'Jack Rabbit Straw.' This appearance can wear away and of course does not exist in the molded plastic Eames chairs that are manufactured today. Thanks to the Eamesoffice website where you can learn much more.

This is what the chair looks like underneath. This iteration of the chair has H mount style legs. The black circles are the 'shock mounts.' They give a little cushion so that the chair is not rigid, and comfortable. These are original shock mounts as evidenced by the the lack of any ghosting or marks from another set. Eames connoisseurs are always on the look for replaced mounts.
