Just published -- a podcast of This American Life that deals with climate change. This is significant because of the influence that these podcasts have in the US. #495: Hot In My Backyard http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/495/hot-in-my-backyard

2.2 M km^2 And smaller next year, close to zero. It seems that a good number of folks both here and elsewhere have been influenced by the cool weather this spring in North America and Europe. The Arctic temperatures have not been colder than normal, however -- see http://polar.ncep.noaa.gov/sst/ophi/color_anomaly_NPS_ophi0.png So my guess is that we will set a significant record, given the thinness of the ice and likelihood of an increase in feedback effects. It is going to be a pivotal year.

FWIW, I have been looking at the Fram each day using Worldview and calculating the speed at which ice is moving. For most purposes, you can use an average of 10 miles per day. It sometimes is more. link - http://earthdata.nasa.gov/labs/worldview/?map=-1004160,-1844480,606592,-798976&products=baselayers.MODIS_Terra_CorrectedReflectance_TrueColor~overlays.arctic_coastlines&time=2013-04-04T12:00:00&switch=arctic

Following up on SATire, the Ellesmere crack appeared rather suddenly between Jan 21 and Jan 22. Overlaying the wind speed and direction for those days on the same chart shows that there was a substantial onshore wind which bifurcated to the east and west more or less along the crack line. I suppose that wind, which seems unusual to this novice, created the stress which broke the ice.
