Jimmy G: You also seem to presuppose that the majority of criminals are persons of color ("minorities"), which is not so: "In 2009, 69.1 percent of all persons arrested were white, 28.3 percent were black, and the remaining 2.6 percent were of other races." "In 2010, 69.4 percent of all persons arrested were white, 28.0 percent were black, and the remaining 2.6 percent were of other races." (From the "Persons Arrested" tabs on the links "Taxpayer" provided above. I couldn't find the equivalent for the 2011 report. I'm guessing it's because it's preliminary, not completed.) Generally, socioeconomic status -- poverty -- is a much better predictor of criminality than is ethnicity, but even that is skewed in that the weathier criminals commit crimes for which they are arrested and successfully prosecuted less frequently, and when successfully prosecuted, are more lightly sentenced, than crimes committed more frequently by poorer people. Those crimes, generally, are also much more damaging to more people than the crimes poorer people tend to commit. Here's a very, very basic page you might want to read before posting anything else: http://www.units.muohio.edu/psybersite/stereo/crime.shtml Here's another, but a much harder read: http://www.cjcj.org/files/Does_age.pdf

Winston Churchill took a lengthy afternoon nap every day of the war, and that seemed to work out pretty well.

On the general theme of political figures saying asinine, racist-appearing remarks in public: The English expression "Negro" as a noun is so irretrievably corrupted by racism that it can not be used, except as an example (as in this usage). As an adjective, it is acceptable only in modifying the noun "spiritual.," and is irretrievably corrupted otherwise, as we have just learned if we didn't know it already. The English expression "Honest Injun" is so irretrievably corrupted by racism that it can not be used at all. Unlike "Negro," however, there never was a time it could be used without being intolerably racist. "Negro" began as a descriptive term to distinguish persons of African heritage from *ordinary* people - persons of European heritage. ""Honest injun" began as a descriptive term to distinguish honest persons of Native heritage from *ordinary* persons of Native heritage - that is, dishonst injuns. I saw a tape of Lott's remarks about Thurmond's campaign at the time, and I saw an old man attempting (without success) to be gracious to an elder statesman of his party, nothing more. I am certain that Lott wasn't thinking of Thurmond's candidacy as having been exclusively and entirely a radically racist act - if he had, he's astute enough not to have said that.. (Of course, Thurmond was far more "elder" than "statesman.") But Lott was just being a dope - no more. I saw a tape of Reid's remark, and I saw an old man attempting (without success) to be descriptive regarding a stereotypical American dialect, nothing more. I am certain that, had he thought things through another one or two seconds, he would have thought of and used a different, less connotation-laden term. I saw the tape of Steele just now, and I saw an old man attempting (without success) to use an expression that meant he was not mistaken, or not kidding - but used one that said he was not lying, instead. He used this irretrievably racist expression, not attempting to be descriptive (as was Reid), nor gracious (as was Lott), but attempting to be - what? - *folksy?* It was overkill to demand Lott to step down, and it would be overkill to demand Reid to step down. Steele, on the other hand - well, maybe the Republicans have become so debased that he really is the best they can do, so he shouldn't step down. And Blago? God help us all!
