Home Sweet Hazmat
(What up, people. This is a sponsored post. Big thanks to Oreck and the AirInstinct Air Purifier. As usual, there's an awesome giveaway at the end and lots of me making an idiot out of myself in the meantime. Enjoy!) One of the weekend prompts for the March Photo a Day challenge on Instragram w...
Found it amazing that the AirInstinct would monitor the air for particles and adjust itself accordingly.

Is the old lady floral pattern supposed to be ironic, or is floral actually young and hip now? I really am clueless (and that's the reason that 99% of my shirts are solids).
More Real-World Style Tips From A Real-World Fan Of Occasionally Wearing Pants
Hey so remember the time I rubbed all y'all's faces in the fact that I got sent a heapload of free jewelry? And then was like, "okay I guess one of you can win some free jewelry too?" Yeah, so it turns out that a lot of you seemed to be very much in the pro-free jewelry camp (shocking!!1!), and ...
Rebekah - she left after being told a second time she couldn't breastfeed on a public bench in the museum.
I'm planning to go to the nurse-in since I'm local. I just hope I can make the schedule juggling work.
Mother told to breastfeed in bathroom at Smithsonian
A Washington D.C. television station is reporting that a mother visiting the Smithsonian Hirshhorn Museum last month left after being told twice to breastfeed in the bathroom. She complied with the initial request, but when she found no place to sit in the bathroom she informed security, and ...
How are your dietary changes going? Still sugar-free and staying away from refined grains (for the most part)?
I'm Out, Part Sixty Million
So, a few years ago, I don't know, 3? (I looked, I couldn't find the post) I ran out of blog topics, and had readers ask me questions. I'm thinking we are going to do this again because I stared at a blank post screen for about an hour last night. It has been 4 years. I'm out of ideas. Ask m...
I'm just happy because I'm wearing my favorite jeans today (from JC Penny, but they've always fit amazing - proof that if you look you don't need $80 denim). These haven't fit in probably 3yrs (yes, that includes pregnancy and post-baby body, but they didn't fit pre-preg either!).
Shoe Friday #108 AND Delurk!
My friend Delora's shoes. ALSO- It is delurking day...delurking day! My favorite day around the blogosphere. So, in honor of Shoe Friday tell me what is your favorite item in your closet. Or, just say hi! I don't care, just DELURK!
I'll have to whip this post out when Tom starts complaining about my new acquisitions. I had several pairs wear out / break on me this summer, so will need replacements as soon as it gets warm out again.
100 Days of Shoe Friday
In order to commemorate this momentous event I present to you every single pair of shoes I own. It's not quite a 100 pair but man, I have a lot of shoes! (Shut up, Doug.) And I can't pick on Doug too much, because Shoe Friday was actually Doug's idea. See you next week, and keep th...
Sorry to hear you have to give up your dream, but your next life adventure sounds pretty darn exciting. If you happen to make it out to the east coast, the CSA farm I support would be an interesting place to stop outside of DC. www.bullrunfarm.com
The land has been in the wife's family for generations, so they own it out-right. This is the only way they'd be able to afford to support a farm in that region, since the land is rocky and troublesome.
The End of our Farm (For Now)
It was already too late for my family farm when I threw out that challenge for you all to put your money where you mouth is and support a radical transformation of the food system (So You Say You Want A Food Revolution?). We decided back in August after a particularly stressful morning discu...
I'd never read any of the older additions, so would love to win a copy of this.
Book review and give away: The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding, 8th edition
See how to enter to win one of three copies at the bottom of this post. A few years ago I gave a talk to a class of nutrition students at a local university. One of the students asked, "What technological advances have been made in breastfeeding recently?" I was stumped. Technological ad...
My milk gets this sour smell after approximately 3 days in the refrigerator, but it doesn't seem to bother baby, so I don't so anything about it. My only concern is that I sometimes have a hard time determining if a bottle of milk has actually turned bad, or if it's just the enzyme breakdown.
Does your pumped milk smell bad, soapy, or metallic? You could have excess lipase.
As I think more about pumping these days, it reminds me of one of the challenges some moms have: excess lipase. Breastmilk usually smells either sweet or like nothing at all, but for some mothers pumped milk has a funny smell - either an "off" smell or a soapy odor. If your milk smells lik...
My MIL volunteered as crew for the '00 and '01 rides. Kudos for you for making the sacrifice of a few days and helping to provide funds for these great organizations.
Keep Pedaling
Exactly ten years ago today I was pedalling through my second 350-mile Washington, DC AIDS Ride. The event was a great physical metaphor for life, particularly the issues I'm facing right now. The following post was originally posted on DC Metro Moms on December 15, 2008. At nineteen years...
I'd left that decision up to my partner, since I don't have that body part. He decided to circ our first son so that they'd "match." We just had our second son, and he also got circumcised since his brother was. I severely regret letting either of them get cut at this point, but what's done is done.
Hey AAP: Ready to Reverse Course on Male Circumcision, Too?
I run in a pretty “crunchy” crowd. Or rather, I used to run in an ultra-crunchy crowd. You know - the kind that grows vegetables in the backyard, argues about the conservative media bias, and generally considers Birkenstocks to be perfectly acceptable for the office. I never seriously consider...
Technically the soda tax failed (that taxed per ounce), but they did pass another soda sales tax to support Healthy Schools.
http://www.theslowcook.com/2010/05/27/a-new-sales-tax-on-sodas/
DC Soda Tax Goes Flat. Healthy School Act in Jeopardy.
Earlier this month the DC Council disapproved the penny per ounce soda tax proposed by Ward 3 Councilwoman Mary Cheh. This tax, which would include not just soda but sports drinks and sugary juice drinks, was proposed to assist in the funding of the $6 million a year Healthy School Act. Curr...
Soooo true how every woman puts on the weight differently. Even though I'm 5'4, when pregnant, I don't get a huge belly; my weight gain tends to be everywhere else. With my first son, I gained 40lbs all in my thighs, chest, arms and face, and never lost any of it. This second pregnancy, I only put on 20lbs (don't be all envious; I was 50lbs overweight to begin with), and many of my co-workers didn't even know I was pregnant until after I delivered. I actually lost all this weight within 2 weeks, but am still working my way back into my clothes 4mos later.
I can't believe your OB office blew you off like that! NOT acceptable from a health care professional.
The big pregnant girl
Last night I called my husband in a panic after the uterine pain I was experiencing would not go away. It had started after I ran two miles at the gym and had been playing with the kids in the pool for a couple of hours, which as of late, has been an almost daily occurrence. But this time, some...
I wonder what percentage of those "not proficient" scores are from poorly written standardized tests. My 4th grader is a voracious reader and constantly talks about the plots of books he's read. I know he doesn't have any difficulty understanding what he reads. However, after getting near perfect scores in Math and Social Studies on his SOLs (Standards of Learning) last year, his reading score, while passing, was poor. He complained that they read a passage on one day of testing, with follow-up questions about the passage given the next day (without having the passage with them).
No Child Left Behind? Today It's More Like Two-Thirds
It's no secret that George W. Bush's No Child Left Behind policy was hardly a success. But when I read this article in the Washington Post, I just about spit my decaf coffee across the keyboard onto my computer screen: "More Third-Graders Struggling with Reading Skills" According to the artic...
The Fairfax Costco is much more civil, with plenty of parking to go around (though I'd still avoid Sats if I were you). You couldn't pay me enough money to try and park at the Pentagon City one.
I'm Quitting Costco
I hate Costco. Maybe that's not quite accurate. I hate mosquitos, going to the dentist, and mayonnaise. I detest Costco. I'm pretty sure that if Dante's Inferno had been written in the 21st century, Costco would have been in there as the tenth circle of hell. I got my Costco membership i...
I fall into the category if wanting to do lots, but always ending up doing little. I can volunteer for the big school events (bingo night, silent auction, etc) and try to send in food when it's requested, but I can never spend time volunteering during the school day because I work full-time. I'm sure there are lots of other wonderful parents that fall into the same category; they would do more if it happened during non-traditional hours.
Volunteers: There are Do-Lots and Do-Littles
You know those children's books that you can recite word for word, since you've read them aloud hundreds of times? In our family, one of those is Babies by Ros Aquith and Sam Williams. My kids Charlie and Evie adored it when they were babies themselves. (And don't tell them that I told you,...
I really want to see this film, and when I had suggested that's what I wanted to do for mother's day (because hello, mommies and babies!), my family laughed at me. Hrumph.
Babies On Film
Babies are awesome. And a movie called Babies that opened earlier this month sets out to show us why, worldwide. I do not currently and have never had a baby but I really do think that they are pretty great in general. I like to watch them and wonder what they're thinking: How did I get h...
No comment on how this dance routine came from a KIDS MOVIE?! Why are movie studios persisting in exposing kids to inappropriate content?
Is Your 7-9 Year Old Girl Sexy Enough?
The world's okay, but it would be so much better if we had seven to nine year old girls bootie dancing in lingerie to Beyonce's Single Ladies. The parents say it's totally innocent and the girls love it. That the girls actually learned the routine from "Alvin and The Chipmunks" and it's not ...
I haven't been able to buy bras in regular stores since I've been able to legally drink. However, I didn't expect to be measured as a G cup (and 2 band sizes larger) when I stopped in to get some nursing bras for baby #2. I don't care what my partner thinks - boobs suck.
A, B, C, D-cup
"Flat as a board." "Pirates nightmare- a sunken chest." "P.N.", that's Pirates Nightmare for short. Those are just a few of the names I was called growing up a flat-chested girl. I knew I would be small-breasted as my mother was and it is hereditary for the most part. What I didn't know was...
