Where do you get the data on oil vs. non-oil investment?
That's just great! More wiseass humor please.

Is there a single prominent fundamentalist without a porn stash? Condition of possibility and all that.

Mommy's Little Girl is one of the things that made able to have a kid. I got all teary-eyed reading it, actually. And now I've got this great 5-year-old running around, whom I'm totally infatuated with. I owe Susie something.

Great post, Susie. They can banalize anything, can't they?

Ok, so the debt stock isn't a problem, but what about the flow? It may make little sense to talk about China selling its dollar reserves, but will they continue to buy all the Treasury paper we need them to buy in the future?

I'm not sure I get that. I'm male, and I like gazing at that image. I think it's kinda hot, in fact. Maybe the fratboy lesbophiles don't - is that it?

This is happening so often that I'm thinking two things: 1) these guys are in political crisis, or at least their star is sinking and 2) it can't just be hypocrisy. There has to be some psychological structure that links highly moralizing public stances with a secret private life. Either they thrive on shame, want to punish themselves for their bad desires, or can't find the life they advocate for others tolerable to themselves. As the theoryheads say, a secret life almost seems like the condition of possibility to be an open prig.

There's a strong correlation (0.88) in quarterly changes between the benchmarked CES data and the BED series since 1992. That suggests that the seasonality issue isn't that big a deal.

I can understand wanting to keep your wireless network open but if someone uses your network to surf the web for child porn or arrange a funds transfer to a madrassa in Pakistan, you could have the FBI at your door. Not to be paranoid or anything... Damn, there's no gayanalfrottage on my Airport menu. I live in a densely packed zone on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, but the most colorful of the 15-20 networks that usually show up on mine is "stinky." One of the many downsides of gentrification, I guess.

Interesting how the Foley affair has upstaged the Woodward book, with its damaging reports on Bush & Co. indifference to pre-9/11 warnings. Of course there were other reports of that, but Woodward has quasi-official status. I think it's incomplete to talk about "hypocrisy" in this context. Seems to me that having a dark, secret life is almost a precondition for being a public moralizer. Either the public moralizing stance is designed to defend against self-doubt and external scrutiny, or the high-minded proper life is absolutely unsustainable without some kind of sexual outlet, or both.
