We took Bean with us to the polls this morning and took turns playing with her while the other filled out a ballot. She is too young, certainly, to understand what we are doing or why, but it feels important... Continue reading

There’s a new coffee company that has exploded onto the Santa Cruz scene recently. A scene, mind you, with no shortage of already established coffee houses. But somehow Verve Coffee is shouldering its way into the crowd and making waves.... Continue reading

I'm pleased to again have a guest from my friend Joan Bailey who writes at Japan Farmers Markets. Japan is one the places I have not yet traveled to, but when I go I hope to time my trip to... Continue reading

Where I live we have an elusive autumn. Non-natives who live in the Bay Area joke that we have no seasons here. We do, but they are subtle, and the edges are sometimes hard to identify. Here on the coast,... Continue reading

I hate taking my daughter to the playground. In my pre-child life, I would walk past parks with playgrounds and see parents standing around with coffee cups in hand, visiting and laughing while their kids scampered over the equipment and... Continue reading

Once, when I was about seven, my father fed me dog food. Not out of neglect or malice, but because I asked him to. We lived in the country, in a trailer leveled off a hillside on cinderblock and iron... Continue reading

How do you administer this concoction to your little one too young to swallow a capsule? This is a great idea. I use a lot of these herbs, but unfortunately usually *after* we've caught something, to help heal faster. Did you find it helped last winter?

This week got a heartbreaking email from Mandi at Life Your Way, whose Easy Homemade book I recently shared with you. She shared a story about the Barlow family. I don't know them, but my heart aches with them. It... Continue reading

While my friend Joan was exploring China last month, I contributed a post for her blog with recipes for three chilled soups. Late in the season for chilled soups you say? September is sweltering in Japan, and our Indian summer... Continue reading

I have recently been practicing some of the following bad habits: Staying up too late at night when I know she always wakes up early in the morning. Drinking too much caffeine to compensate for the prior bad habit. Letting... Continue reading

I scheduled this post on my calendar the week that I brought home water kefir grains. I imagined that I would be posting a beautiful tutorial about how to start your own water kefir and you all would be so... Continue reading

Last night I sat at the kitchen table and worked my way through my mending basket. First the bra that had an escaping wire got a patch. Then I modified another bra to add nursing clips (and yay! I have... Continue reading

When we were at Strawberry Music Festival over Memorial Day, we had the best ice pops I think I've ever tasted. They were cherry-pomegranate flavored, just the right balance of sweet and tart, and the most amazing garnet shade of... Continue reading
