A commenter at Glenn's blog concisely summed up exactly what it is we are facing if this doctrine is not vehemently resisted: Under the Administration's radical legal theory, the only thing preventing the imposition of full-scale marshall [sic] law here in the United States (for as long as al Qaeda exists) is the discretion of the President. It's as simple as that. According to the administration, the President alone decides when the "war" is over. Since the use of "terror" as a tactic is likely to continue indefinitely, the President's power to override the law of the land will also continue indefinitely. Bush really will destroy the republic, if we let him.

Putatively "pro-choice" Republicans plainly don't give a shit, and why should they? Whatever happens to Roe, the women in their lives will continue to freely exercise their de facto "choice" to have safe abortions performed by competent practioners in clean, well-equipped surroundings. The absence of de jure choice matters only to the poor women who will now be forced by the state to bear children they don't want and can't afford.
Poor Matt. Remember, he's just a kid.

It's becoming ever clearer that even so-called "responsible" Republicans (John McCain, et al.) now see a perfect identity between their party's narrow political interests and the interests of the country at large. A very dangerous state of affairs, indeed.
