Thanks for taking this self publishing phenomena by the short hairs and giving it a shake. My impression of self-published authors based on meeting many is this: they don't understand the "10,000-hour rule" of skill development. Becoming a great/good writer is like becoming a great/good surgeon. It takes not only talent but lots and lots of practice. Being able to immediately publish your very first literary effort is tantamount to deciding to be a medical doctor on Monday and putting your shingle up six months later. Note to would-be self publishers: pay your dues, learn the craft. The joy of simply writing should ultimately be enough. If later you happen to become rich and famous, good for you.
