This is interesting. Insofar as "environmental preferences" are a normal good, the relocation of higher income earners to rural areas may improve sustainability/reduce emissions in those areas. It's probably a very small benefit, as I doubt there is much polluting activity in rural areas. Optimal sorting would put those with green preferences in areas with the largest marginal damage curves, ceteris paribus. But, still there may be some environmental gain. Anyone have thoughts on this?
