Obunko, a one-story structure with a two-level basement, was completed in July 1942 as an air raid shelter. Hirohito and the empress, posthumously known as Empress Kojun, began to reside in the building in January 1943. The second-story basement bears traces of what are believed to have been a doorway to an underground passage to Obunko Fuzokushitsu. (Provided by the Imperial Household Agency)

Molly Panter Downes writing in the *New Yorker*: >The African victory came so suddenly that astonished Londoners had hardly enough breath left to cheer with. The news of the all-out offensive had already put everyone in a mood of confident expectation, but the fall of Tunis and Bizerte was so far...

jon livesey: Then there are the leaders whose goal is war. Consider the invasion of Iraq. Or the Spanish American War. Far too many times diplomacy was not tried; Or it was essayed in bad faith.

happiest days stuff (one in a continuing series)
I spent all day today doing publishing stuff. I processed all the orders up until about 2p.m. today, and as soon as my new envelopes arrive tomorrow, I'll stuff them and ship them, so if you got a confirmation e-mail from me yesterday or today, your book should arrive before the end of next week...

Sleep welcomed me faster than I expected, once my head was on my pillow and the lights were out. In fact, I fell asleep so quickly, it seemed like I closed my eyes and the alarm went off moments later. The rising sun bathed the kitchen in bright and warm light, and more than two dozen birds sang...

How's the screen play for this plot going?
Does your agent have the treatment out?
This is the sort of story that could shake up Jo Globotz of 2002 into Johnny Patriot of 1776.

So you entered a time warp today and were in the other line at Costco: you, Ann, Ryan and Nolan.
Ann was gorgeous, though she would never admit it because she hadn't made an effort -- vacation! You hadn't shaved and wore your tone shorts that came just to your knee. Ryan and Nolan might have been clones of you in appearence, and yet very much themselves. It was so obvious that they cared for you as much as you cared for them.
All four of you were so perfectly yourselves, only it was maybe seven years ago.
"Ryan" was maybe eleven, though "Nolan" was probably nine.
Thanks for wafting through my day. Hope your day was as wonderful as theirs.

It's funny. Laugh.
Tonight, I played a little Razz at Poker Stars, and though I made two very expensive second-best hands, I heard a hilarious joke that made the small loss entirely worthwhile. Courtesy of a player I'll just call "X": A guy walks into a bar, and orders six shots. The bartender pours them, and he s...
