Editor's note: For our last week at Style Lush, I've asked the writers to share both a favorite post by another writer, from over the last three years, and a favorite post of their own. You'll see these posts linked to at the top of their new post for the week. Enjoy a stroll down Lush memory lane! by Elizabeth I really want to talk about how sad I am that Style Lush is ending! I do. I am very sad. However, I think it's more important that I take this last chance to say thank you. Thank you most... Continue reading

by Elizabeth Just in case my scintillating blog title didn't give it away already, the thing is, I need a new mattress. And I have no idea how to pick a good one. We picked out the one we have now by lying on mattresses in a mattress show room. It seemed fine at the time, but seven years later, it's pretty awful -- there are two giant divots in the spots where my husband and I sleep, and I wake up every morning with terrible lower back pain. So needless to say, I'm not sure I really think that... Continue reading

Updated: The giveaway is now closed, and we have a winner! Congratulations to April G. (#19). I'll be in touch this week with more details about your $50 gift card to Hats in the Belfry! *** by Elizabeth Editor's note: Elizabeth was sent a hat from Hats in the Belfry to review, free of charge, and they're providing a $50 gift card to their Belfry hat line to a lucky reader. She wasn't compensated otherwise and the opinions and thoughts in this post are her own. I've been undergoing a little bit of a personal life transformation of late. Early... Continue reading

by Elizabeth I'll be be honest, even though I love a peasant skirt or a brightly colored t-shirt dress as much as the next person, during the winter, I wear a lot of dark colors ... black dresses, navy leggings, dark wash jeans, all that good stuff. And now that I'm trying to make sure my wardrobe looks a little bit better than "this is what was on the floor from yesterday" I'm also trying to make sure I take better care of the clothes I do have. I can't help but notice that all these dark clothes of mine... Continue reading

by Elizabeth A few years ago, I bought myself a silver tree when Target first rolled out their Christmas decorations for the year. The year after that, I wanted another one, so I decided I would collect silver trees at Christmas time. This year there weren't any silver ones at Target I liked, but I did end up finding one at Pottery Barn and it is lined up on my mantel as we speak. (The one I bought isn't available online anymore but there were tons in the store. It's that lumpy looking one in the picture below.) I love... Continue reading

by Elizabeth The other day I was reading the lovely Slynnro's Christmas wish list, and I noticed the hair ties that she linked to. This is the not the first time I have seen this variety of hair ties and been horrified that people are paying this exorbitant price for thirty cents worth of material tied in a knot, so I thought as a public service announcement I'd explain how to make these yourself. Here's what you'll need: Scissors, a ruler (Fermilab Swag variety not required), and some Fold Over Elastic, commonly referred to as FOE. Now, I have a... Continue reading

by Elizabeth This winter I decided that instead of wearing jeans and t-shirts and boots and a puffy down vest every single day until May, I would buy three black dresses and I'd wear those at least a few times a week. I figured with different shoes and various necklaces and scarves and leggings I could accessorize a few black dresses into a billion different outfits and make them a little more casual for Kindergarten pick-up and a little more dressed-up for holiday goings on. The problem is that even though I can see the PERFECT dress in my head,... Continue reading

by Elizabeth So my five year old has always had a certain proclivity for oderrific feet, if I'm being honest here. He inherited this from his father, who claims this is the reason he never gets sick, but judging by all the vomit I cleaned up this weekend, this theory is somewhat flawed. Anyway, as soon as Kindergarten started, my son started wearing sneakers with no socks to school all the time and when he would come home and take them off, I'm not kidding, the kid could clear a room. It was BAD. BAD BAD BAD. In an effort... Continue reading

by Elizabeth So, the big news around here is that the five year old in our house recently started Kindergarten. For reasons I am not entirely clear on, there's no parking lot for drop off and pick up, which means that four times a day I have to park on the street and walk a few blocks to the school. This means that my tolerance for really high heels I can barely walk in is diminishing at a rapid rate. I'm not the type who can gracefully saunter down the sidewalk in four-inch heels. I am instead the type who... Continue reading

by Elizabeth So these Lands' End boots? They are amazing. Now, keep in mind that we live in California and when we took these boots with us to Vermont last year in February, they weren't great for snow because they're not waterproof, but for an everyday winter shoe? They were fantastic. They are SUPER great quality, adorable, and lined in shearling so they're really comfortable, and my 4 year old could pull them on and off with no help from me. I mean, seriously, I wanted a pair. And tons of people asked us where we got them, so I... Continue reading

by Elizabeth So, I have a little confession to make. I've been sort of slacking on shoe buying for my 5 year old for some time now. I mean, he has shoes, but mostly they've been Target specials with a few impulse Stride Rite purchases thrown in when I see a good sale. I think I mostly just have PTSD from the last time I dragged him into a shoe store and made him try on shoes (there was an honest-to-god floor tantrum), but he's starting Kindergarten in a few weeks, and I've been meaning to buy him some "cool"... by Elizabeth Lately I've been buying a caboodle of t shirt dresses (so comfy and cute!), and I'm hopeful that at least some of them can transition from summer into fall and then winter if I add a scarf or a cardigan, and then when it gets really cold, I'll add some leggings or tights. (But I'd prefer leggings, to be honest, I'm not a tights lover.) Here's where you come in, dear reader, because for some reason I seem to be severely challenged in the "matching leggings to a dress" arena. You can buy just about any color leggings... by Elizabeth I've been subscribing to Birchbox for a while now and I have to say that while it's been hit or miss at times, overall I am pretty happy with the service. (For those of you not in the know, Birchbox is a $10 a monthly sample subscription service. They charge you $10 including shipping and send you a cute box with 4-5 samples of beauty items.) A few months ago I was contemplating canceling my subscription, but since then I've gotten enough things I've liked in my Birchbox that at this point for only $10 a month, it's... Continue reading

by Elizabeth There's a lot of fun stuff to do in this city of mine, but one thing I always tell people with kids they must do is to check ArtBeast! It's a crazy cool, old house turned into a "drop in arts exploration space" filled with all kinds of fun stuff for kids ... every art supply you can imagine (and you don't have to clean up after yourself when you're done!), all kinds of surfaces to draw and paint on, and there's an upstairs area filled with squishy foam blocks for babies. The basement area is filled with... Continue reading

by Elizabeth Recently I was trolling some back corner of the internet and I came across a forum all about drugstore shampoo where I noticed a comment from someone saying that L'Oreal EverPure Shampoo is the only good drugstore shampoo, period. How this has been established, I have no idea, but considering that I am always looking for shampoo that is 1. cheap 2. readily available 3. volumizing and 4. will make my hair shiny, I figured it was worth a shot. When I finally found the stuff at my local Target though, I froze. I don't think they had... Continue reading

by Elizabeth So, this Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain came out a few weeks ago, and right away everyone noticed that it looks JUST LIKE Tarte Lipsurgence Lip Stain, except that the Tarte stuff is $24 at Sephora and the Revlon stuff is $8 at Target. I have a Tarte Lipsurgence already and I love it, so I rushed right out and bought the Revlon stuff so I could compare the two, because wow is $24 for lip gloss hard for me to swallow (and that's, in fact, why I only own one LipSurgence even though I really like... by Elizabeth The other day I had something I needed to return and a gift card to spend, and I ventured out to the mall. It reminded me why I love online shopping so much. Despite the delicious pretzels and the cranked-up a/c, the mall is a wretched, wretched place. The problem with online ordering though, is that the sizes of things range so crazily, at least in my opinion. Or is that just me? Sometimes the reviews are helpful, but usually they're all over the place and no one can agree, so they don't actually help. Anyway, I thought... Continue reading

by Elizabeth I have a secret theory (that I tell everyone) that buying expensive purses actually saves you money. In my mind, I'm only allowed to own $300 purses if I don't let myself buy any of the $30 purses that catch my eye as I wander around Target. One $300 purse once a year saves me A LOT of money on random cheapy purses. In theory. Anyway, the other day I noticed that I had been spending a lot of time dithering around the cheap purse section of Target again and it made me realize that it has been... Continue reading

by Elizabeth I recently got sucked into placing yet another combined Gap and Old Navy order. Sometimes that 25%-off email is just too tough to resist. Anyway, I thought I'd let you know what I got and whether it was a "keep" or "send this back and let's never speak of it again." First up, the Mason Crew T from the Gap, in navy stripe. When I first tried this on, I thought it was a miss, but I think I was just wearing it with the wrong thing, and now I love it. The stripes go the other way... Continue reading

by Elizabeth Ever since I decided to move "look less like a total schlub" closer to the top of my priority list, I've been looking for easy summer shoes that are just a titch above flip-flops on the dressy scale, and I can't find any I like! It's really quite a problem, at least when you define "problem" as something that is actually not really a big deal but that still consumes many hours of my time as I fruitlessly engage in hopeless late night online searches. Anyway. I am looking for a summer sandal, flattish, but not the kind... Continue reading

by Elizabeth So, I recently decided to start paying just a little bit more attention to what I wear on a daily basis. Now, don't get me wrong, I am still throwing on a t-shirt almost every morning, but I'm trying to pair that t-shirt with a cute skirt or a fun necklace or some of the amazing shoes collecting dust in the back of my closet for years. And I made myself a promise that I would quit throwing cheap Target t-shirts in the cart, and instead I'd just make sure I always have at least five great fitting... Continue reading

by Elizabeth I'm smack in the middle of de-suckifying my backyard, and it's full of fun things like paying someone $450 to drill a drainage hole that should have been put in a wall to begin with and trying to keep the world's most annoying dog off of new sod. Shiny new throw pillows for furniture I haven't bought yet is SO not in the budget, but sometimes you just need to take a break from overpriced cement drilling estimates and do some window shopping, am I right? I ALWAYS love the outdoor stuff at Cost Plus or World Market... Continue reading

by Elizabeth So, I happen to have lucked out mega big time in the next door neighbor department. She babysits my kids and cooks us dinner and picks up toilet paper for me at Costco and gets my kids from preschool when I'm running late and has groups of us over to teach her secret Italian recipes. She is as amazing as it gets, so we try to say thank you as much as we can by buying her flowers or little treats and extra nice birthday and Christmas presents. It sounds ridiculous but even though she dismisses it with... Continue reading

by Elizabeth Let me just start this off by saying that this cat piano makes the second most annoying sound I have ever heard in my entire life. Furthermore, it goes against all my hippie parenting sensibilities (no plastic! no batteries! no music makers!) that sounded so! good! before I actually had children. Then I had two of them and I realized that no noise on earth, I repeat, NO NOISE ON THE FACE OF THIS EARTH is more annoying than the sound of your own children whining and screaming and crying. NOTHING. So yes, this cat piano is incredibly... Continue reading
