Two more lines to add to my previous post of annual minima that have been more than halved:
242 (2.48831) (4.97662): 1992 (5.02678), 1985 (4.99285)
244 (2.44437) (4.88874): 1981 (4.95649), 1997 (4.89971)
Record dominoes 3: Cryosphere Today SIA
There are several scientific organisations that keep an eye on the Arctic sea ice cover and put out graphs to inform us of the amount of ice that is left. You can see most, if not all, of them on the ASI Graphs webpage. I expect the record on most of these graphs to be broken in weeks to come. -...

ASI 2012 update 10: (wh)at a loss
During the melting season I'm writing (bi-)weekly updates on the current situation with regards to Arctic sea ice (ASI). Central to these updates are the daily IJIS sea ice extent (SIE) and Cryosphere Today sea ice area (SIA) numbers, which I compare to data from the 2005-2011 period (NSIDC h...
With the latest update CT area is for the first time less than half (49,8%) of the highest minimum, 5,50771 in 1980.

CT SIA anomaly drops below 2 million km2
With a drop of 174,867 square km for July 17th reported by Cryosphere Today (run by the Polar Research Group at the University of Illonois at Urbana-Champaign), the 2012 sea ice area anomaly has dropped below 2 million square kilometres, compared to the 1979-2008 mean: So what, one may ask. It ...

April 2012 Open Thread
Just like with calling the CT SIA maximum, I can't even get the timing for the last open thread right. But the March open thread was getting full. This should be the last one. I think. image by Paul Nicklen, found on the Narwhal's Left Tooth blog I'll be gone for a couple of days, but should be...
Using the false-color 'Bands 3-6-7' makes it a bit easier to separate ice and clouds. It's only available from Terra, not Aqua.
Flushing out the Fjord
I wrote a blog post on Jakobshavn Isbræ last year when a 7 square kilometer (2.7 square mile) section of the glacier broke up. Here's some basic information from Wikipedia on one of the most important Greenland glaciers, with an image of the glacier on August 5th last year (the glacier is on the...
