so funny you should be typing about these as i almost made a batch last night! i like to make mine organic and so i'm always working with the mini shredded wheats. i measured the large shredded wheats by weight to be precise. when using the mini shredded wheats, use 3 and 3/4 ounces of mini wheats (106 grams). hope that helps! i do still plan to make them soon so if you need a cup measurement rather than a weight let me know and i'll update you!

new things in the garden, part two:: i don't know why we'd never grown onions before. these sweet walla wallas were super easy and very successful. i'll grow a couple extra rows next year and definitely seed in some red onions as well. Continue reading

organic russets and organic red chieftains from high mowing organic seeds:: i think i may try these in containers next season. i read something somewhere about it and it seems like a good idea. i'm almost certain i missed some out there. Continue reading

hi linda! look in the text under the 7th picture. where it says "you can find it free right here." the words "right here" are a different color and are a link to the pattern. if you click on them it will take you there! let me know if that works. i can always email the link to you if you are still having trouble. thanks for reading!

new things in the garden, part one:: these are mouse melons. tiny little cucumbers that look like miniature watermelons. they are still producing! pick them when they are little for a more mellow flavor. they are delicious and the perfect pop of cucumber. i grew them on the trellis with the rest of the cukes and string beans. i am in love. they will be a staple now for sure. hi daniela! it's been a while since i made these. i don't remember if the m&m's discolored. but i think that i would frost and store and then stick the m&m's on before serving. you never know whats going to happen in the fridge and inevitably there will be some sweating when you take the cupcakes out to display and serve. let me know how it goes!
finally getting going on the new quilts for the girls:: i have a slightly enormous amount of cutting left before i can start at the machine. the colors are starting to wear on me a little, but i know the girls will like them. i am going to try to stay disciplined with this project. i've already promised matching pillow cases and even decorative pillows with fringe. what? i don't know what i was thinking. i was getting excited while telling indy my plans. i've got to watch that. these kids don't mess around. if i said fringe, there will... let's just start by doing the basic introductions and leave the "minus two" for later, because it's partially sad. it's a "good news, bad news" kind of thing. here they are, almost all grown up:: now for the first story. right here, below dandelion, there should be a picture of daisy. daisy and dandelion are a pair from the same hatch; two pearl white leghorns named after flowers, just like our first leghorn, buttercup. the good news? she's alive. she's just not very picture friendly at the moment as she was completely scalped by the other chickens. completely. it was... i think a few people are having trouble with that. she must have stopped promoting her patterns. i just checked on ravelry and it looks like it is still there for sale:: let me know if that works or not. i hope it does :)

so glad my brother shared this. it's true for all of us and i hope you guys will pass it on. this is the stuff that needs to be going viral:: such a beautiful and well made video. i love the breathing of the tide (minute 13:45). "our most viable pathway to survive on this planet is to not abandon the ancestral wisdom of humanity." we cast our vote everyday. pass it on, pass it on. share, repost, etc! Continue reading

swarming is how the hive reproduces. in essence, the hive is growing and splits to create a new hive of bees. the queen leaves with some of the bees but leaves behind eggs and worker bees so that they can make a new queen. it is really an amazing thing and it is the nature of the bee. they are such incredible little creatures.

thanks beth! the long arm quilting was done by a local woman on the cape. i just updated my post with her website. she does such a great job.

i was working in the kitchen yesterday when i heard our green hive start to swarm. at that point, all we could do was watch:: again they were hanging nearly 30 feet up. there was no way to try to capture them and bring them back. this time, the scout bees did their work quickly and within a few hours, the cluster started to sag and then broke and left for good. :: i will miss this queen, she was a super strong one. hopefully the one the hive will raise will be just as productive. so it goes with... it is done:: quite a long, long time coming. but all it took in the end was some new fabric and another pattern and a dream of making a quilt for each of the girls before summer is up. here's hoping they'll at least be unwrapping them during the holidays. more news on that project to come, and hopefully it won't span nearly two years like this one. i'm going to do less pinning this time. that should help. the long arm quilting was done locally by terry of in stitches. you can find her here. she does a wonderfully... this pattern is too cute and is available as a free download on ravelry here:: yes, lots of ends to tie in and some seam sewing involved, but they are so small it isn't as daunting as you would think. i was seaming them up and tying in ends as i went and then i had to stop. there were no instructions for the button loops, so i reached out on ravelry. thank you a million times to kris of bockstark handspun! she emailed me right back with a link to this button loop tutorial. i'm so grateful. it was... two great books that are perfect for your favorite nature lover or your own bookshelf:: these were for owen's eleventh birthday. i forget where he spotted the animal architecture book but i'm so glad he did. these books are different in style and feeling but equally engaging and captivating and i'm so happy they are in his library. last month i signed up for silversmithing classes. the first night was pretty much three hours of me geeking out. one hundred percent, instantly hooked:: i was a little nervous going in, but it was like a crafters wonderland. new tools, new materials, new methods, new everything. add to this a super skilled teacher and some time spent playing with fire and i've got myself a new addiction. can't wait for the next class. clamming time:: it was an early morning. and then we forgot the life jackets. but we made it out there, got our fill of steamers and quahogs, spotted more than a couple moon snails, wandered around on the sand bar exploring and made it home before lunch. a perfect cape cod morning. followed by a delicious afternoon. fellow clammers may want to revisit this post. the last of the radishes were pulled yesterday. the remaining crimson giants:: the final french breakfast radishes (my favorite):: and the rest of the cherry belles:: it's salad time. though i tend to nibble these just as they are, with only a bit of sea salt added. i love radishes. and that cleared out radish spot was just what i needed. i started one too many tomato plants this season and was able to fit a small amount of the overflow into that opening. i'll have to be creative with the rest. i've been considering the flower garden. whatever works! yes, the quilt. the quilt is not finished yet. don't judge. it's been a busy year. however, please note that the quilting is complete and the binding is on. only a bit of hand sewing stands between it being balled up in a bag next to my bed and it being folded nicely over the back of the couch:: i made it a quarter of the way around and then stopped. true to form. i just need to refocus my focus. in other words, i'm working on working on it. know what i mean?
