Holiday Books Old and New
Lots of people (including me) are still working on their holiday shopping, and books are of course a great present for kids (and everyone else)! Mother Reader's 105 Ways to Give a Book is becoming a holiday classic, with ideas for all ages, from preschoolers to adults. If you and your child like...
I love this poem. Thanks for posting it. It made me sort of laugh and sort of almost cry, a little.
An Ode to Moms by Billy Collins
My friend Nancy Ford sent me this video of Billy Collins reading his poem "The Lanyard." If you've ever been a parent, a child, a teacher, a summer camper, or some combination thereof-- this poem is a MUST. If you watch it, let me know whether it makes you laugh or cry.
Wow! Congratulations!

A Conversation with Carrie
Carrie: When I was a baby I killed a few times. Baba: You did? Carrie: Yeah, but I was a baby then. Baba: How did you kill them? Carrie: A gun Baba: What did you kill, Carrie? Carrie: Books. Because they didn't have horses in them.
The Naked Brothers are you guys's cousins?! Wow! I've heard of them! And I live under a rock!

Naked Cousins and Care Bears on Fire
Yes, more cousins! Today kid rockers Nat and Alex Wolff were in town and played a gig at the House of Blues, Houston. We got the royal cousin treatment, including VIP status and back stage passes. This was Pearl and Carrie's first rock concert. They liked Nat and Alex and their band, ...
I like the Lower East Side Tenement Museum. And the Burnaby Village Museum, here in my new hometown, which is sort of an amalgamated reproduction of a 1920's town. And just about any living-history museum, but those are the two I know best.
Question of the Day: Museums
What's your favorite museum? And why?
The puppies were growing up fast...
Pearl is Rockin
After taking April off, I'm behind in updates on the children, so I thought I'd do a post on Pearl today, and one about Carrie, tomorrow. Pearl was accepted into our first choice kindergarten, and we are excited about that. Admission included two tests and a lottery. She is excited because th...
They're definitely sisters, but they're definitely different!
2 Sisters at 3
Tonight Carrie found a baby photo that she wanted to take to preschool tomorrow for show and tell. I took a look at the picture she'd found; it was actually one of Pearl. Here are pictures of Pearl and Carrie as three-year-olds. Members of the jury, what say ye?
Happy Chanukah to all you grrls!
Happy Chanukah, from Texas with Love
Really? Truly? A shiny blue Honda Fit. And 2 weeks of no alarm clock bleating--I miss some things about the academic schedule!
Question of the Day: Make a Wish
"Wishful" Originally uploaded by jessilynn Tell us what you really want for Chanukah/Christmas/Kwaanza.
OK, I take back my earlier comment. She doesn't have issues with being the only Jewish kid...except in December. And so do I. *sigh*
Just Visiting
This week Marcia and I are visiting kindergartens. Yes, it's true; Pearl will start kindergarten next fall. Here's a snapshot from a kindergarten classroom I observed yesterday. Despite Prop 8 and other examples of hate legislation, there are still reasons for us to be hopeful.
Robyn-- FWIW, My kid is the only Jewish kid and the only kid with two moms at the very nice neighborhood public school where she goes now. She (and everyone else) seems fine with it. But I would've been more anxious had she started there in kindergarten and not 2nd grade.
