I bought my daughter a t-shirt with this saying on it about 4-5 years ago. I'm hearing it now, more than ever. Just yesterday I was at a Chamber of Commerce session at the new FDA White Oak, Maryland campus (Building 31) hearing about how "Green" the building is (even though I could not recycle my plastic juice bottle, I hope someone fixed that today). I thought I'd see which GSA Federal Supply Schedule was the vehicle for "Green Opportunities" and I found THREE. Here's the link CLICK HERE It's definitely an area worthy of research and investment. Let me... Continue reading

By MATTHEW G. LAMOREAUX and ALISTAIR M. NEVIUS SEPTEMBER 23, 2010 The House on Thursday passed the Small Business Jobs Act of 2010 (HR 5297) by a vote of 237–187, and sent it to the President, who is expected to sign the bill into law. The bill, which passed the Senate last week, expands loan programs through the Small Business Administration (SBA), strengthens small business preference programs for federal government projects, provides incentives for exporters, offers a variety of small business tax breaks and includes some revenue raisers. The part I'm most interested in... Small Business Federal Contracting Federal agencies... Continue reading

That's what the Center for an Urban Future said in their latest study. Well, not exactly, but Eriksen Translations is featured in a fascinating report by the venerable think tank that was released this week. Titled "Breaking Into the Corporate Supply Chain" the report suggests that large corporations are not taking advantage of what small businesses have to offer. Working with companies like Eriksen, who have experience serving companies of every size, but are small enough to offer agility and innovation that large corporations can't match, is good for business. But you knew that! We are honored to be included... Continue reading

All of us have creativity, but not all of us apply it to our work or businesses. My love for what I do (work that brings home the bacon) was truly ignited in 1996 when I took a creative writing class and applied some of the priniciples to my technical writing projects. I'm still applying "creative" spins to everything I do and that's a key reason why I love what I do, and it doesn't feel like work. I found this wonderful list of upcoming events from Aronson & Company's website: GSA is sponsoring the following training and events online or in the DC area: November 17, 2009: GSA Schedules Training Webinar - The Office of Small Business Utilization conducts monthly training on the process of obtaining a GSA schedules contract. This a very well-done webinar for anyone who wants to know the basics about GSA schedules. My advice, don't embarass yourself with stupid questions at the end, but PAY attention to the slides and the facilitator. November 24, 2009: GSA Schedules Contract Training - How to Obtain... There is so much activity in the Washington, DC area that it's hard to keep up sometimes. I've created a network of colleagues who keep me connected to what's going on in the world around me (meaning in my own back yard). A big Thank You to my neighbor and friend, Rose Woodruff of Executive Decision Coaching for keeping me in the loop on an important small business topic. The SBA has raised the cap on some SBA loans. Watch the whole video to see which loan programs are affected. Doug Peters whose business where this announcement took place is... Continue reading

For the past three years, I have been meditating on one word for the year, to deepen my understanding of that word. My word for 2009 is CHANGE, not because of Obama, but for the fact that starting my own full-time business is a huge change in my life. With change comes opportunities, not only for me and my business, but for every business owner. This current state of the U.S. economy is forcing every consumer and every business to adapt to the changing market. As we watch and adapt to the changes in the administration of our government, we... Continue reading

Melody, I've been following your career in scrapbooking since, day one, however I didn't know about your hardship (or period of growth) over the past year. I want to thank you for sharing, sharing the value of being open to others that aren't from your "neck of the woods", sharing your honesty about being a pampered wife, not knowing your real inner strength. I too have had the pleasure of befriending Judy and she gave me confirmation that sharing my faith will continue to be the crux of why I do what I do. I created a mini-album that was inspired by the 7 principles of kwanzaa, but I wanted to adapt it so that it woulf fit a broader audience so the alternative was to use the Beatitudes as a life guiding principle and when I shared this with a fellow instructor she told me to be careful of attaching faith to my class. I ignored her and Judy sat in on my class and her responses and contributions gave me the confirmation that what I was doing was right on the mark.
