Is it bad that I think a reprise of Kent State would be an improvement to the student body of Columbia?
Columbia University brings shame and dishonor to the Ivy League
Update: Alums are speaking out. From the NY Post: Hero's unwelcome Wounded Iraq vet jeered at Columbia By ANNIE KARNI Columbia University students heckled a war hero during a town-hall meeting on whether ROTC should be allowed back on campus. "Racist!" some students yelled at Anthony Masche...
The tanks are being deployed to a fairly open and flat area, where (if I remember correctly) the Canadians and Danes have previously used them to effect.
Something Else No One Checked With Me On....
I am guessing that I can add this gem from the WaPo to the list.... US Deploying Heavily Armored Battle Tanks For First Time in Afghan War... So, as part of rendering my one man only opinion on this, take a seat here next to me in the Way-Back Machine and let me show you a little of why I thin...
Anyone who knows body armor ratings would know that nothing short of a clean headshot would've taken out the N. Hollywood guys, short of, say, a .338 Lapua Mag in the COM. Factor in having there be two guys, and having them being spraying you with
I find that most opposition to the existence of SWAT teams is is emotion-based. Lots of liberals and libertarians would rather have regular patrolmen dead due to lack of proper training and equipment than piss themselves at the sight of the same cop with a K-pot, AR-15 and a few courses at Thunder Ranch. Sure, there may be a few dozen bad incidents with SWAT, but how many thousand operations do they go on annually? The same kind of BS thinking is used by the Brady's and VPC when they point out that (OMG) x many CCW holders shoot people illegitimately each year. It's a drop in the bucket when you look at it as a percentile.
As for cop199's old school experience, I dare him to put back on his uniform and go up against 5 South Central gangbangers with MAC-10s while armed only with a .38 six-shooter (bonus points for no vest). Don't believe this a plausible scenario? Look to what happened to the deputy in Pinal County, AZ, last week. He is supremely lucky that he wasn't killed, and probably would've been if he hadn't had a rifle with him.
SWAT Overkill
There are far too many examples of SWAT tactics used against individuals who no rational person could consider a danger to law enforcement. I have a piece about a brain-boiling example of this. It's a little testy and the whole thing is disturbing to me. Disclaimer: I greatly respect the dangero...
You're right. However, heavy artillery and laser-guided bombs can. I think if we treated Taliban prisoners like they treated prisoners they've taken, they'd either quit real fast or get pissed off and start acting stupid and make themselves bigger targets. Either way, I think the soundest policy we could pursue is total annihilation of the enemy wherever he pops up.
COIN: Know when to say when
To conduct an effective counterinsurgency (COIN) campaign, it is my understanding that one must also have a legitimate government that has the support of the people. But Afghan president Hamid Karzai recently told members of parliament that he would join the Taliban if outside governments contin...
Why the hell haven't we offed that Karzai fucker yet?

I recall reading that quite a few more Canadians actually enlisted in the US military during the Vietnam era than Americans fled to Canada.
Medal of Honor history: Lemon and Beikirch
40 years ago, SP4 Peter Lemon and Sgt. Gary Beikirch earned the Medal of Honor in two separate incidents in Vietnam. When Fire Support Base Illingworth came under attack, Lemon – a native Canadian and one of the youngest Medal recipients – engaged a numerically-superior enemy with his weapons u...
I think it's worth noting that 300-400m is well within the effective range of the M4.
Punching Out, Where It Counts
Winds of Change has an important post on the subject of something very basic: having a rifle and a doctrine that can engage the enemy at the range where he is usually encountered. In Afghanistan, that's out to about six hundred meters. While the infantryman is ideally suited for combat in Afg...
It goes back even before then, to studies done by the military during WWII. Long story short, they found that most shootouts were at close range, and whoever put out the most rounds in the least amount of times generally won. Hence the STG44, M2 carbine, and the AK-47 shortly after the war. These studies in part lead to the adoption of the AR-15 platform, and what was learned in WWII held true in Vietnam when put to the test. Seems to have worked in Iraq, too.
It would probably be cheaper and easier to just pound the enemy with HMGs/mortars/arty/ARA at the these long distances in Afghanistan and save the ammo for close encounters. But who knows.

Streetfighting in Afghanistan
It may be a stretch to call them streets, but our troops in Afghanistan are sure doing some tough fighting. Fortunately these Marines have a lot of institutional experience gained in Iraq and Afghanistan. When most people think of the Battle of Fallujah they think of these same Marines, but ther...

God hates DC & The Cutest
The second snowstorm this week proves God hates DC and politicians. A ton more snow, but this time w/ bitter cold and 20-25 mph winds. Woo Hoo! Upside? The 7/11 four blocks from my house is open. The way upside is I work from home and only went out to see how much it sucked. Answer? Plenty. Now...

French comments on US military
We at Blackfive have a long history of showing love to our French allies. Actually since Sarkozy was elected it has been kinda fun to have them back on the team. Here is an article about what their troops think of ours. Good stuff. Subject: French view of US Military by Jean-Marc Liotier http:/...

Accusations of abuse against our troops & the ICC
I have a bad feeling that we are going to be seeing a lot of folks claiming that our forces have roughed them up. First of all it is right in the al Qaeda training manual. They are told to start whining early and often that they were tortured or otherwise abused. We saw last week that the guys s...
At least once every day I think I have lost all faith in humanity and then inevitably something new comes up to make me wonder why I ever had any faith in humanity in the first place. The fact that this is even a headline is pushing America farther along into our inevitable downfall, at our own hands.
SEALs face charges for WTF?
Unless this guy shows up with multiple compound fractures caused by the repeated use of a chunk of rebar long after he was in custody in the rear, I will go on record as saying I don't give a f**k. Navy SEALs have secretly captured one of the most wanted terrorists in Iraq — the alleged master...
God bless Gary Sinise. Interestingly, (at least for a while) his character on CSI had the same portrait of Reagan than winemkr has as an avatar.
A Man
No PR, no photo ops for the media, no hoopla via PAO. Just a man, who quietly makes time for the troops. Thank you sir. LW
IIRC it was Tommy Franks.
Ethical vegan- It's what's for dinner
This guy is my new favorite post-human. LATELY more people have begun to express an interest in where the meat they eat comes from and how it was raised. Were the animals humanely treated? Did they have a good quality of life before the death that turned them into someone’s dinner? Actually, I ...

Most realistic combat video game ever
(h/t HA) Holy crap. This might be funnier than those MMA guys giving wedgies. The most realistic depiction of life during wartime you may ever see short of enlisting yourself.

Italians convict 23 Americans in rendition case
This looks like it could get ugly for a number of reasons. MILAN -- An Italian court on Wednesday convicted 22 CIA operatives and a U.S. Air Force colonel of orchestrating the kidnapping of a Muslim cleric in Milan in 2003 and flying him to Egypt, where he said he was later tortured. The judg...

Pakistan can bomb houses, why can't we?
Good question. They seem to be flattening all kinds of stuff at the same time we are getting very touchy about bombing much at all on the other side of the border. DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan -- Pakistani jets bombed militant targets in the main insurgent stronghold along the Afghan border Tuesd...
How many troops do we have tied down in Kosovo? Don't we have, ahem, more pressing issues for them to attend to?
Teeth and Tails
So the WaPo has noted that when you deploy grunts to a war, someone has to feed them and fix the tuff they break, and drive the stuff their and guard it once it is there. This news flash, which they treat as such, is exactly the same reporting we got every time there was a troop increase. Obama ...

Another investigation of the Battle of Wanat

Call me thick, but I don't see why an ordinary happening of war is so strange to the, um, brass. If they took the time and money to investigate every unlucky blow of the wind from, say, Vietnam, we'd probably be looking up events from 1966 *today*. Seems like some people just can't accept that shit happens.
The feel I'm getting is that someone, somewhere, thinks it preposterous that the Taliban could ever get the jump on us in any case, and reeks of the lack of respect for the ability of the enemy that has lead to downfall and defeat in the past.

If we don't help, then I think it only leaves the Israelis one option. Better to fight it on their terms than the Iranians.
How Likely Is Israel To Strike Iran?
In all honesty, I don't know - I would guess it would depend on a lot of things, but primarily the perceived level of the Iranian threat and the military assessment of whether such a strike would be a) viable and b) effective. All that follows is speculation based on the military aspect of any ...

"Realists" tell Obama to Cut & Run- Again
As I have said quite a few times we are playing out the 2006 argument over Iraq again regarding Afghanistan. The usual suspects muster the same arguments about lost causes, lack of exit strategies etc. and see the same solution they proposed in 2006. "RUN, you're on MLK, RUN!" (reference anyone?...
