My idea is that African-American or African diaspora culture in the West far exceeds its character as the negative image of white culture in the imaginary dualism; it is also autonomous, a creative response to oppression and way of being in the world, as in a thousand black artistic expressions from Louis to Marley, religious expressions like Nation of Islam or Rastafarianism, political thought and organizing from Marcus Garvey or Frederick Douglass, etc etc.
