Tonight I had a particularly emotional yoga class. I was unable to go for a week- a long time for me recently in my yoga practice- and it has been a week of a lot of transition. I have been holding on tight in many ways, physically and emotionally. So... Continue reading

Over another 40 days have passed since the end of the ritual. In the end I decided not to do anything to commemorate the end because I didn't want it to be over. I wanted to take the spirit of the 40 days into the rest of my life. I... Continue reading

On the way to see Dena, I had a rather "unfortunate" incident. The trip I had planned from LAX to Seattle and back was to take a total of 26 hours. I would fly to Seattle via San Jose and arrive by 11:30 am Friday, take a shower, hopefully take... Continue reading

Earlier this week I did something that has been previously uncharacteristic- I went to visit a friend. I actually went out of my way to spend time with two friends in out of the usual contexts. First I went to Seattle to support one of my oldest and dearest friends,... Continue reading

Brilliant! I cannot believe I never joked to you about that place! It was a great assignment, I love that you thought of it and I love the intention behind it. Too often I don't think about what's going on in my area that I don't know much about, or I feel outside of it, but really that just makes it a fun adventure to get inside of. Thank you for the reminder. And yes, the salmon was absolutely amazing. I will go back there.

I've been developing this theory during the course of all this work, and it is this: The word "should" is clutter. Years ago I got a book about feng shui called Clear Your Clutter with Feng Shui. The basic principle of the book, as I recall, was that your clutter... Continue reading

Do you use humor as a defense? When you are uncomfortable or annoyed with something, is a joke your first response? Then by all means, do not become friends with my dear friend Dena. Or if you do, never give her the opportunity for comeuppance. It's possible, nay, probable that... Continue reading

In the Acro Yoga class I took, we began with sitting in a circle, breathing into our heart centers with our hands in prayer position, then opening and pressing our palms to the palms of those on either side of us. It's similar to what is done in other groups... Continue reading

The class began with these words, "The way you approach anything is the way you approach everything." So I took a deep breath and quieted the panicked mind. This will be fun. Tonight I found myself in a class unlike anything I've ever heard of, and without any preparation as... Continue reading

When I began the blog I wanted to report to you about what was happening during these 40 days. I wanted to tell you these stories, these adventures I was going on into the world of connection and out of the world of fantasy. What's happened, though, is that I've... Continue reading

Friday no one signed up on the calendar. I worried I would have no opportunity for an "event" other than a workshop I had signed myself up for over the course of the weekend which started that night. But in the throws of this experiment in connection I did just... Continue reading

Thursday my fantastic friend Jessica came over and we went down to the beach for picture time! It's been forever since I've seen Jessica, but she is just one of those people I can see and it feels like no time has passed. It was really wonderful to talk to... Continue reading

Last Wednesday was actually a second attempt at the ritual from Day 11, when my friend Katie and I arrived at the wrong time to volunteer. Katie often helps an organization called The Dream Center who bases their operation around the corner from where she lives. Among other things, the... Continue reading

Apologies. I apologize frequently. Saying I'm sorry isn't really my hang-up, I sometimes even say it more than is called for, and I always try to say it sincerely. So when I was assigned to apologize to someone today (via phone or in person, no virtual communique allowed) I had... Continue reading

That idea is just plain evil! I will have to try it at some point.

Monday was a challenge! First up, here was what was written on the calendar: 5:45am-6:15am Go outside to a place of your choosing & experience the sunrise-connecting with everything (which should happen at approx 6:02am), say good morning to everyone you see on the way to/from the sunrise. Then you're... Continue reading

On Sunday I was signed up not once, but twice. And what a gift! When I was going to send the letter originally there would have been so many rules no one would have dared sign me out twice. But since the benefit of getting rid of the rules, of... Continue reading

Tonight I joined a choir! Singing in a choir was something I did all through high school, and I studied musical theater in college. As an adult I've performed off and on and it has frequently involved singing, but there is something really specific about being in a choir that... Continue reading

Another day, another Big Sunday event. This time my friends Amy & Ray signed us up to volunteer at the East Valley Animal Shelter. The idea was to pick a dog, take some pictures, pick a bandana to tie around it's neck, and write a story about the dog. It... Continue reading

Ooooh! You must wear it! I wore mine on Saturday and got a lot of compliments. Of course, the event I attended had a slightly vintage feel.

Over the weekend was Big Sunday, a Los Angeles volunteer event, so a couple of my friends got the bright idea of signing me up for events through them, and were even kind enough to join me. Saturday my roommate Jen signed us up to paint the railings on the... Continue reading

I am beginning to feel, in the last few days, as if I am always in the ritual. Whenever I interact with people I try to bring myself in a way that is open and compassionate and wants to connect to others. I smile at people on the street and... Continue reading

This morning a friend from college, Katie, booked me for a mystery assignment. I love when people do this! After all, I am trying to overcome planning, control, and fantasy, so leaving it an unknown until the last minute when possible is really helpful. It also, surprisingly, makes it easier... Woo! Day 10! A quarter of the way there, and also, finally a day off and able to focus entirely on the ritual. After sleeping in, I spent the first part of the day returning emails. I had quite a backlog, and to those of you who were waiting to... Continue reading
