The article I linked is perhaps the best summary--the article from The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2016/jun/20/microfibers-plastic-pollution-oceans-patagonia-synthetic-clothes-microbeads references some other studies. The science is new, but although no direct evidence has yet shown that consuming these micro bits of plastic is harmful, as one scientist says, we have to assume it isn't healthy until proven otherwise.
Besides, when I can avoid a possible problem with WOOL or LINEN or COTTON, well, that's great!
Clothes That Rot
I truly believe the most subversive thing you can do today is spend as much of the day as possible nurturing what is not machine-like in you. ~ Austin Kleon You know that at-loose-ends feeling you get after finishing a big project? Yeah, that's me. My book (The Joy of Color) took so much of...
For sure, Caroline, for sure.

Self-Publishing: Getting Started
And sometimes you just know: It is time to start something new and trust the magic of beginnings. ~ Meister Eckhardt I'm sitting at the table, fondling the rough proofs of The Joy of Color. Such an incredible feeling, seeing the nearly end result of so many years of effort (still on ...
Pippa--let me know if there's anything in particular you'd like to know!

We missed you, Marilyn!
Return from Madrona
Ah, the Madrona Fiber Arts Winter Retreat, in Tacoma, Washington--every Presidents' Day weekend you can count on this "retreat," a word that probably doesn't conjure an event held in an upscale hotel decorated with glass created by some 20 designers, attended by some 900 people (not includin...
It'll be great to see you again, Pallas! I think your lovely yarns would work beautifully in a stranded yoke sweater--bring some for me to fondle, ok?
Madrona Fiber Arts 2016
I hope you are already on the mailing list for Madrona Fiber Arts news, because it is always such a great, inspirational, energizing event. Madrona is held every February in Tacoma, Washington (Tacoma? you say, disbelievingly--yes, Tacoma, the Tac in SeaTac Airport. It's a 20 minute shuttle ri...
Thanks, Stan! I think I've found someone, and the excitement is starting to build again!
Book Chronicles, Part 1
Making a book is like buying a house. If you've never done it, you can't figure out why people aren't more excited when they move into their very own home! But the entire process seems designed to wring every bit of enjoyment and pride out of the result, leaving you with regrets and second tho...
Thanks, Beth! Yeah, writing a book is just about as fun as it sounds!!!

Man, that inner critic is relentless! Anne Lamott's writings have been very helpful in subduing that voice, but when I get tired that critic takes advantage, like a virus!

R.--I know for a fact that this isn't true! If more people apply during the short application period (usually first week of February) Schoolhouse Press draws them by lot. I've been on a waiting list myself--the waiting lists move rather quickly. And either this year or last Camp 2 had openings for a long time. I attend Camp 2.75, and we had 5 or 6 brand new people this year, along with regulars and people who had been at other sessions and chose this one instead. Please try again! Camp has a reputation for being hard to get into that isn't the reality--perhaps it is all the other knitting gatherings that are available these days, as opposed to 16 years ago.
Wisconsin IS Summer
I come from a family that has been rooted in the American West Coast for generations; any traveling we did was north and south, but we never went east of the Cascade/Sierra ranges. When I got older I had a chance to visit Vermont and Washington DC on work trips, but until I became a knitter I'd ...
The museum was so very well done! It gave a sense of how it FELT in Sicily during the war: newspapers, maps of Allied offenses, uniforms of all forces involved, including school uniforms! I think you would definitely get a sense of your father's experience by visiting.
Never Enough Sicily
Live snails at the Catania market The World War II museum in Catania, focussed on the Allied landings in Sicily, was fantastic--this Red Cross flag touched me with its humble cry for peace. The museum has very thoughtful exhibits: a reconstructed town square before and after bombing; a bomb ...
Good way to look at it, Deb--thanks!
Memories
Memory has its own story to tell. ~Tobias Wolf There comes a point in the decluttering process when you have to deal with the hard stuff: the large boxes of family photos and letters. I've skimmed off the low-hanging fruit--the odd Christmas cards from people I've never heard of, the duplica...
Some of the letters have already been donated to the Washington State Historical Museum--I'm thinking these will go there too, if the museum wants them. Or the Skagit County museum. So interesting to read about when the road to town was paved, and other stuff like that that we take for granted today!
