Hello! Thanks for your email. I'm taking a cyber-break and only checking emails very occasionally until Monday 15th February, when I'll get back online. If it's urgent, please text me on 0408787582. Cheers! Asphyxia www.asphyxia.com.au
My blog has moved!! Yes, after years on Typepad, I've taken the plunge and jumped to Wordpress. Why? Wordpress gives me a lot more control to choose how my site will look, and I can integrate it with my regular... Continue reading

Paula has been making these absolutely adorable little Christmas trees to sell at our upcoming markets. I am totally and utterly in love with them. She makes them from upcycled bits of scavenged wood that she collects through the year.... Continue reading

Here are some signs about food: Vocab: • Breakfast (this is like eating a bowl of cereal with a spoon - I should have just fed myself two spoonfuls in the video, not three) • Lunch (this is like eating... Continue reading

This is just an example of the sort of goodness you might find in your mailbox if you subscribe to my art (and my heart): a postcard I collaged from vintage supplies I collected at a flea market a fabric... Continue reading

A little while ago, some Auslan students asked if they could make a video about me and my life, for a school assignment. Here it is - a lil guided tour of my home, my art studio, my journals, and... Continue reading

For me birds are about flight, about courage to take a leap and try something new and different and scary. This painting is for anyone who needs a little nudge to spread their wings and soar. I painted it on... Continue reading

Hi Sue, thanks for all your lovely comments. When I’m reading I don’t hear or think of individual words. It plays in my brain, maybe like a movie. I just see and understand it, no imaginary auditory component. Shapes and colours aren’t really relevant for me either. Since I went Deaf when I was three I could already speak and had already developed strong English language and concepts, but over time my reading has definitely moved away from an aural experience. Cheers, Asphyxia

When I painted my big canvas, A Connection, recently, I had so much leftover paint on my palette that I couldn’t bear to waste, so I spread it over a smaller piece of plastered fabric, and next thing I knew,... Continue reading

Bird girl is surrounded by all the birds she loves against vibrant, rich colours, in a field of flowers. She's painted on plastered fabric, and I slashed into it, creating a very textured effect like an old wall. If you'd... Continue reading

When I was in Norway, I was walking through beautiful hills with my friends Ragnhild and Atle. We came to this glorious private rocky beach, which was so picturesque I almost died. On a dare, Atle and I stripped off... Continue reading

My deafness has been a bit of a theme in my life recently. Normally it’s just something that’s there, in the background, not particularly interesting to me, not a focus, but part of my identity anyway. Writing Future Girl, in... Continue reading

There's a misconception that lipreading is just like reading a book. You look at the mouth and read, right? But no, it's far, far more complicated than that. I have to queue up words in my mind, invent possibilities that... Continue reading

This video is hilarious. Unfortunately, it's so true. It's not just interpreters who have these kinds of stupid, STUPID conversations with people who have never thought about what it means to be Deaf. Deaf people have them too... all the... Continue reading

There are so many ways to interpret this painting and I can't even decide how *I* want to interpret it! But I love the connection between the two birds, even though they are so different - small and large, dark... Continue reading
